How Planned Parenthood’s defenders in the Senate are trying to distract you

I’ve been listening to the Senate debate about defunding Planned Parenthood. Two things stand out: (1) the moral clarity of Senators arguing to defund the nation’s largest abortion provider (2) and the inane, morally retrograde defense of Planned Parenthood offered by Senators on the other side.

Let’s be clear what Senators defending Planned Parenthood are arguing. They do not dispute that Planned Parenthood crushes and dismembers babies in utero and that Planned Parenthood sells their mutilated bodies to researchers. If you are waiting for them to dispute those facts, don’t hold your breath. That much is not in dispute. Their argument boils down to this—a woman’s access to “affordable healthcare” is a more weighty interest than a human baby’s life.

The idea that Planned Parenthood is the best or only affordable way for women to access healthcare is absurd. We should not concede that point to Planned Parenthood’s defenders. But let’s assume for the sake of argument that Planned Parenthood really is all that its defenders claim that it is. Even if we grant that Planned Parenthood offers valuable services besides abortion, in what moral universe is one person’s “right” to affordable healthcare more important than another person’s right not to be killed and sold for parts?

That is the question that none of Planned Parenthood’s defenders in the Senate are willing to answer. It’s a question that they can’t answer. And it is the question that they are doing their level best to distract you from. Defenders of Planned Parenthood don’t want you thinking about the children killed, dismembered, and sold in Planned Parenthood facilities. Why? Because only by distracting from the main issue can they preserve their bloody “right to choose.”

Until now, it has been rather easy for them to conceal the reality of what goes on in those clinics. But that has all changed now. We’ve seen the videos of the mutilated babies, and we’ve seen their executioners haggling over how much their parts are worth.

It looks like there won’t be enough votes to defund Planned Parenthood today. But God help us if we forget what is before us and give up this fight. We may not win this vote today, but this is far from over. Not by a long shot.

Thanks Denny for covering this so well!
I have a question for you:

In a reply from my Senator via email, he states, “that under current law no federal funds are used for abortion services. A law, often referred to as the Hyde amendment, specifies that the use of federal funds to perform or promote abortion is prohibited except in the cases of rape, incest, or when a woman’s life is endangered.”

Can you shed some light on this? Especially regarding tax payer dollars going towards abortions.

    Thanks

“Their argument boils down to this—a woman’s access to ‘affordable healthcare’ is a more weighty interest than a human baby’s life.”

I thought ObamaSnare (aka the “Affordable Healthcare Act”) was supposed to take care of a woman’s access to affordable healthcare. The Dems’ argument here is utterly mindless, yea, even reprobate.

    Insightful post.
