    How ‘Bout Them Dawgs?!

The College post-season has been set, and the two teams that I pull for are both playing in bowl games. The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (my alma mater) will be squaring-off against Northern Illinois in the Independence Bowl. And the LSU Tigers will be meeting Georgia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The Bulldogs were able to sneak into this bowl because the SEC and the Big 12 didn’t have enough bowl-eligible teams to fill the slots. But that’s okay. The Bulldogs haven’t been in a bowl since 2002, and all of us Bulldog fans are grateful for whatever we can get. I think we have a good chance of winning this…

    How the BCS Should Shake-out

After the Sooners finish shellacking Mizzou tonight, I think it’s pretty clear which two teams should be appearing in the BCS championship game: Florida and Oklahoma. I hate it for Texas, but it is what it is. The BCS is already the biggest sham in sports. And if Florida and Oklahoma are not the final two in the BCS formula, then I think the BCS will not survive. How could it? On a related but unrelated note: During the SEC championship game, the camera showed Joey and Christy Allen cheering on the Gators. Christy is Tim Tebow’s sister, and she and Joey are now missionaries in an undisclosed overseas location.…

Jim Hamilton Is a Sorry Hog

I love Jim Hamilton. I really do. But today he is a sorry hog. Here’s why. Today I watched the LSU Tigers put the finishing touches on their abysmal season as they lost to the Arkansas Razorbacks by one point (31-30). It was painful to watch. The Tigers practically gave the game away. Their defense has stunk up the field all season, and tonight was no exception. With major penalties at critical moments during the game, the Tigers managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. After the game was over, I picked up my cell phone, and I see that I have missed a string of calls from…

BCS Is Clear, But Best Team Is Out

With today’s games in the rear-view mirror, it is clear to see who will be at the top of next week’s BCS rankings. Alabama will remain number one, and Texas Tech will be number two. Unfortunately, the best team in the country (the Florida Gators) will not be in the top two. Florida’s loss to Ole Miss (I still can’t figure that one out) means that they are out of the big game unless one of the top two loses one. LSU has lost every big game that it has played (Florida, Georgia, and Alabama). In two of them, they’ve gave up over 50 points per game (Florida and Georgia).…

    Florida Is Making the Case

Florida will not emerge as the number one ranked team in the country next week. Nevertheless, I think they may be the best team in the country right now. After their embarrassing loss to Ole Miss, something snapped inside Tebow and his teammates (click here to see what Tebow said after the loss). Since that loss, the Gators put up 51 points against the number 4 team in the nation (LSU) and 49 points against the number 6 team in the nation (Georgia). I think the Gators are likely to win their remaining regular season games. Their last big test will likely be Alabama in the SEC championship. If they…

LSU Wins with a Mediocre Performance

LSU beat South Carolina tonight, and as a fan I can’t be anything but happy about that. The Tigers move to 5-1 and are second in the SEC West behind Alabama. [Watch ESPN’s recap here.] Nevertheless, I don’t think that LSU looked very impressive at all. Without question, they stunk up the 1st half. Against a better team, they would have been trailing by a big margin going into halftime. When that happens, it’s a different game. That’s exactly what happened when they played Florida, and I’m afraid it’s going to happen again when they play Alabama and perhaps Georgia. I hate to be pessimistic, but I can see LSU…

That’s All I Have To Say about That

Last night, I had a dream that LSU was losing really badly to Florida, but in the end the Tigers staged a comeback and pulled out a win. It was a great dream. It was also totally fictional. In real life, LSU lost miserably, and I can hardly think of any redeeming aspect of LSU’s performance last night. What does this mean for the program this year? I don’t think that LSU looks like a championship caliber team. Florida was the first real test for the Tigers, and they failed it miserably. Before that, their two biggest wins were Auburn and Mississippi State (neither of which are looking very impressive…

    I’m in the Twilight Zone

What an unbelievable weekend of college football. Both Vanderbilt and Kentucky are legitimate contenders in the SEC. Kentucky nearly beat the number two team in the country, Alabama. I’m watching Vandy in the victory formation right now to beat Auburn 14-13. It’s their first win over Auburn since 1955! After this game Vandy will be in the lead in the SEC East—ahead of both Florida and Georgia. ESPN’s College Gameday broadcasted from the Vanderbilt game in Nashville and passed on the Miami vs. Florida State game. Unbelievable. I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone.

    USC Stunned . . . Woohoo!

Readers of this blog already know that I am no fan of USC. So with the Trojans’s loss to Oregon State, this is shaping up to be a great weekend of college football. What a spectacle it is when the over-inflated media-darlings take their lumps. So much for being ranked number one. Did I hear someone say Schadenfreude? When LSU beats Mississippi State on Saturday night, it will have been the perfect weekend for college football. Stay tuned.

    The Tigers Beat the Tigers

The LSU Tigers put a whoopin’ on the Auburn Tigers tonight, and it was a great game. After seeing Florida put a shellacking on Tennessee and hearing Alabama lower the hammer on Arkansas, it was good to see a hard-fought game. I think that Tigers v. Tigers may have been the best game all day. The SEC has four other teams ranked in the Top 10, and LSU will have to play all of them before the season is out. So this was a big win for LSU. One down and three to go. One other thing. In terms of difficulty of schedule, compare LSU to USC. USC is the…
