Texas A&M, you are invited to join the SEC…Psyche!

Well, we thought that Texas A&M was about to be invited to join the SEC. But the SEC just made an announcement that amounts to a great big “Psyche!” I was already looking forward to the addition. The door isn’t closed yet, so you Aggies need to keep your fingers crossed. Watch the video below. Here’s the statement released by Bernie Machen, the president of the University of Florida chair of the Southeastern Conference Presidents and Chancellors: The SEC Presidents and Chancellors met today and reaffirmed our satisfaction with the present 12 institutional alignment. We recognize, however, that future conditions may make it advantageous to expand the number of institutions…

Texas A&M Gears-up To Join the SEC

It looks like Texas A&M University is close to an agreement to bolt the Big 12 to enter the SEC. I don’t blame A&M for wanting to make the change. They need to blaze their own trail and to get out of the shadow of the Texas Longhorns. I think the Aggies have a great program, and the SEC will only elevate their prospects. The weekly competition will be more difficult than anything they’ve ever faced, but it will be a boon for the program. This news about A&M reminds me of the last time the Aggies travelled to Baton Rouge to play LSU. Their buses had almost reached the…

Shannon Stone: Husband, Father, Hero, RIP

Last week, Shannon Stone took his six-year old son Cooper to watch the Texas Rangers play the Oakland A’s at the Ballpark in Arlington. During the second inning, Mr. Stone fell from the stands while trying to catch a foul ball that Rangers’ star Josh Hamilton had thrown to him. One hour later, Stone was pronounced dead at a local hospital. He was 39. There aren’t many pure things in the world, but one thing that comes close is a father and a son at a ballgame together. Yet out of nowhere, a most unexpected tragedy shoots a dart right into the heart of this family and leaves a boy…

Why did Dirk leave the court early?

Viewers watching the NBA Finals last night may have noticed that Dirk Nowitzki left the court in the final seconds before the game was over. He therefore missed the customary post-game celebration and shaking hands with the opposing team. Some reports have speculated that it was a “lack of class” on Dirk’s part that he left.

It’s Been a Long Time Coming

I just finished watching one of the greatest NBA Finals series I’ve ever seen. At long last, the Dallas Mavericks finally did it. They won the first championship in the history of the franchise, and they did it in dramatic fashion. For years, the Mavs have been looking for another superstar to bring in alongside of Dirk Nowitzki, but it turns out that they didn’t need that. They did it with one superstar and a team of veterans living up to their potential. Coach Carlisle called this a victory for team basketball, and that’s exactly what this was. This title is a long time in coming for long-time fans. About…

    Greatest NBA Finals Comeback Ever

I was on the road today and have not been able to comment on last night’s big game until now. I have to say that Dallas’ win over Miami was probably the best comeback victory that I have ever seen. If you missed the game, the highlights are above. With about seven minutes left in the game and the with the Mavs trailing by 15 points, I thought the game was over. I was already mentally preparing myself for a sweep. The Mavs ended up having more confidence than me. They went on a 22-5 run that ended with Dirk Nowitzki hitting the winning shot in the final seconds of…

    NBA Finals: Good vs. Evil?

The NBA Finals begin tonight, and some have described it as a contest between good and evil. That formulation is a bit too apocalyptic in my view. Nevertheless, I think David Moore of the Dallas Morning News has it about right: “Those prone to hyperbole will cast the NBA Finals as a battle for basketball’s soul. “More is at stake than a determination of the league’s best team. The winner of this series hands down a moral judgment.
