Update from SBTS: Aslan is on the Move

It looked like C. S. Lewis’ White Witch had landed on the campus of Southern Seminary this week, bringing destruction in her wake. But Aslan is on the move. Dr. Mohler returned from being out of the country last night, and sunny skies are beginning to melt the ice and snow that you see in the video above. Even though most of the campus still has no power, our students are well-taken care of, and our spirits are high.

Down But Not Out in Louisville, KY

The winter storm that blasted across the Midwest this week has put my blogging out of commission the last couple of days. About 200,000 homes in Louisville, Kentucky lost power this week. The campus on which I live and work was also affected, but we are all doing well. I’ll get back to my normal blogging routine soon enough. In the meantime, here’s what’s happening in our neck of the woods:

Boyce College on ‘Wheel of Fortune’

Well, Boyce College won’t actually be on “Wheel of Fortune,” but one of our employees will be. Allison Parker is the administrative assistant to Boyce College’s Dean of Student Life, and she is the wife of Southern Seminary M.Div. student Zack Parker. Allison will be appearing as a contestant on tonight’s edition of “Wheel of Fortune.” I asked her at a recent Christmas party how her game ended up (the show was taped in October), but she was pretty cryptic about the show’s results. So we’ll all be on the edge of our seats tonight to see how she fares. Go Allison! “SBTS employee to appear on Wheel of Fortune”…

    The New Look at dennyburk.com

You may have noticed that last month this website got a facelift. There are many more features on the blog, and I think it looks much better than it did before. The new look and functionality are due to my friend David Yeiser’s Renaissance blog theme. Yeiser developed this brilliant theme for WordPress, and it is the best theme that I have ever worked with. It is highly customizable and is widget-enabled. If you are interested in owning this theme, you can buy it here. Thanks, David. Brilliant work.

Jim Hamilton Is a Sorry Hog

I love Jim Hamilton. I really do. But today he is a sorry hog. Here’s why. Today I watched the LSU Tigers put the finishing touches on their abysmal season as they lost to the Arkansas Razorbacks by one point (31-30). It was painful to watch. The Tigers practically gave the game away. Their defense has stunk up the field all season, and tonight was no exception. With major penalties at critical moments during the game, the Tigers managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. After the game was over, I picked up my cell phone, and I see that I have missed a string of calls from…

Hitchens vs. Wilson: A Collision of Lives

Christopher Hitchens and Douglas Wilson squared-off in a recent series of debates over atheism. Hitchens is an atheist with an acerbic wit who thinks Christianity to be a blight on society. Douglas Wilson is a Christian who wants to show the reasonableness of the Christian faith. The video above is a trailer for a forthcoming documentary that describes the debates. (HT: Justin Taylor)

    Don’t Feed the Blog Trolls

I have a fairly liberal comments policy. I have turned my blog filter on so that it automatically sifts out comments with profanity. Other than that, I generally do not screen all the comments. I’m not saying it’s the best policy. It’s just the one that I use because I simply do not have time to read all of the comments (especially in the longer threads), and I do not want to turn off the comments altogether.

    What’s Happening in Louisville?

In my last post, I mentioned that I have been without power due to Hurrican Ike. Yes, believe it or not, we got hurricane force winds way up here in Louisville, Kentucky. As a result, the entire campus of Southern Seminary is without power. Moreover, about 300,000 homes and businesses in Louisville are still withouth electricity and will be for some time. Governor Steve Beshear declared a state of emergency on Sunday in a press release. The governor has said that “This is the biggest outage on record in the Commonwealth of Kentucky,” and officials estimate that it will take 10-14 days to restore power to parts of the city…
