    Boyce College Dorm Meeting Worship

We just had an outstanding dorm meeting at Boyce College tonight. Dr. Russell Moore preached a message from James 1 (which will appear on the Boyce College blog tomorrow). Buck Buchanan is leading our worship band, and they are doing a bang-up job—really incredible. I hope they’ll record some of their music this year so that I can share it with you here. Until they do, please enjoy the album that the band produced last school year. You can download the entire album as a zip file here, or listen below.

    Les Paul (1915-2009)

The Associated Press reports that Les Paul has passed away: “Les Paul, the guitar virtuoso and inventor who revolutionized music and created rock ‘n’ roll as surely as Elvis Presley and the Beatles by developing the solid-body electric guitar and multitrack recording, died Thursday at age 94. . . “Paul, who died in White Plains, N.Y., of complications from pneumonia, was a tireless tinkerer, whose quest for a particular sound led him to create the first solid-body electric guitar, a departure from the hollow-body guitars of the time. His invention paved the way for modern rock ‘n’ roll and became the standard instrument for legends like Pete Townshend and Jimmy…

    Derek Webb: Clean or Explicit?

Derek Webb has a new album out, and it comes with a bit of controversy. BeliefNet.com reports the following: ‘Derek Webb’s new album, Stockholm Syndrome, will be released in September in two versions: a clean and explicit version. ‘The controversy surrounds the lyrics to one of the songs, “What Matters More,” in which Webb says apparently the word “sh*t”. In typical Derek Webb fashion, he’s used a bit of shock value to make a point and in the process made his label a little nervous. (And used it all to promote the album.)‘

Sojourn Music: The Hymns of Isaac Watts

Mike Cosper and Sojourn Music have just released another CD, and it is a block-buster: “Over The Grave: The Hymns Of Isaac Watts, volume one.” I heard these guys play live last week at the Baptist21 meeting held at Sojourn Community Church, and that is where I first heard the song that is my favorite on the album, “Only Your Blood Is Enough.” You can preview this and other songs from the album on their MySpace or Facebook pages. This is a great album, and I think you should buy it. The music and production value are excellent, and the lyrics are all from Isaac Watts. How can you go…

    What happened to CCM?

Were you ever a reader of CCM magazine? I was… sort of. I was more of a casual browser than a reader. For the uninitiated, CCM stands for “Contemporary Christian Music,” and CCM magazine was like the evangelical version of Rolling Stone. In the late 90’s when I was a student at DTS, there was one particular issue on the shelf at the DTS bookstore that caught my attention. The glossy cover featured my favorite group, Caedmon’s Call. Believe it or not, I was such a fan of the band that I actually signed-up for a one-year subscription to CCM. A more thoughtful person might have stopped to ponder that…

    Joyful Noise

I’ve highlighted Flame on this blog before. You’ll remember that he’s one of my students at Boyce College and that he is also a grammy-nominated gospel hip-hop artist. I love his music. Our family just happened to be listening to the song above on our way home from church today, so I thought I would take the opportunity to share it with you. Here are the lyrics to the chorus:

    Keith & Kristyn Getty

Keith and Kristyn Getty are probably best known for their song “In Christ Alone.” It’s already become a modern day classic and is sung in churches all over the world. The Getty’s song-writing, however, goes far beyond just this one song. They are on a mission to write gospel-centered, bible-saturated, doctrinally-sound hymns for the Christian church. You will not find any “Jesus is my girlfriend” type songs with the Getty’s. They are producing God-exalting material, and I think their ministry is a great gift to the church.

    Boyce College Worship

Buck Buchanan leads worship in Boyce College’s weekly dorm meeting, and he and the worship band recently recorded an album of music from those meetings. I’m really grateful for these guys and want to share their work with you. There are seven songs, and you can download them free of charge at the following link. Zip File: Buck Buchanan – “Amen” Buck wrote to me about his goal for this album: “My prayer with this project was that God would work through this music and let people hear it that need to know the truth about Jesus.” That’s a prayer we can all agree with.

All Things Are Better In Koine

To all my Greek students past, present, and future. I thought you would really enjoy this one. Some guys at BIOLA have produced a video about Bible students who have to go through grueling semesters of learning Koine Greek (Koine means “common” and it refers to the popular form of Greek spoken at the time of the New Testament). Here are my favorite lines: 1.     “λέγομαι ἐγώ,” which sounds like “leggo my eggo”2.    “Bill Mounce gonna make you bounce . . . Daniel Wallace” I am looking forward to teaching my Greek 4 class this semester, but I promise there will be no rapping . . . well, maybe a little.…
