LSU Is Still the Best Team in the Nation

It was a tough weekend for the LSU Tigers. Needless to say, I was very disappointed that they lost to the Wildcats of Kentucky (who I predict will lose big to Florida next weekend). Nevertheless, I agree with ESPN’s Colin Cowherd who says that LSU should still be ranked as the best team in the nation, not Ohio State. Even though Ohio State has a perfect record thus far, they do so as a member of the “wobbly Big 10.” In fact, Ohio State’s strength of schedule is ranked 118th in the nation. Ohio State was perfect last year and got drubbed by a one-loss SEC school, the Florida Gators.…

    The Tigers Get Γ’β‚¬Λœer Done

It wasn’t pretty. LSU turned the ball over once, and they had 7 penalties for 61 yards. On top of that, the Gators were in rare form under Tebow. LSU’s vaunted defense didn’t look so good for about the first three quarters. The Tigers trailed the Gators until about the last minute and a half of the game. I don’t have the heart to gloat (even though I’m normally not above such things πŸ™‚ ). Tebow is good. Really good. Vince Young good. I have a new respect for him and his team. Nevertheless, Jacob Hester has every bit as much heart and brawn as Tebow, and Hester was truly…

Still a Sucker for the Underdog

I’m still a big fat sucker for the underdog. I loved it when Boise State put it on Oklahoma in last Season’s Fiesta Bowl. And I loved it on Saturday when Appalachian State beat Michigan. Can you believe that? I still can’t. It’s not just that a Division 1-AA school beat a Division 1-A school. This little David beat the number 5 Goliath in the country, the University of Michigan. Pat Forde of ESPN has it right:

Un-stinking-believable! Rangers Run Up the Score

Even if you’re not a Rangers fan, you’ll want to hear about this. The Texas Rangers rolled over the Orioles today, and the final score was 30-3. No, you’re eyes aren’t deceiving you. The Rangers scored 30 runs! So much for the 10 run rule! No team has scored that many runs in a single game since 1897. This is definitely one for the books.

    The Mailman Is Back

The Mailman Karl Malone is back. Not back to the NBA, but back to his alma mater and mine, Louisiana Tech University. Not only is he back as an assistant coach for the basketball team he once took to the Sweet 16, but he’s also promising to clean up the program: “The days at Louisiana Tech University of baggy pants, cell phones in the arena, hats turned to the side Ò€” those are over.”

The Superbowl comes to Dallas! (. . . I mean, Arlington)

The Associated Press is reporting that the Superbowl will be coming to Dallas in 2011. Actually, it will be played in Arlington, which is a part of the Metroplex, but not Dallas proper. It could have been in Dallas, had the Dallas City Council and the Mayor gotten their acts together. But alas, the new Cowboy stadium is to be built in Arlington, and that will be the site for Superbowl 45. Woohoo! “North Texas Wins” Γ’β‚¬β€œ Mickey Spagnola (DallasCowboys.com) “North Texas bid beats Indy, Arizona for 2011 Super Bowl” Γ’β‚¬β€œ Associated Press

    Nowitzki Will Win MVP Trophy

ESPN reports that the star of the Dallas Mavericks will win the MVP trophy. Asked for comment on finishing the season with an astounding 67 wins, Nowitzki said: “I’ve said it a million times: We could go 82-0 and we know it means nothing unless we win it all.” There are many fans here in Big “D” who couldn’t agree more with that sentiment.

Karl Malone To Coach at Louisiana Tech

Jeff Goodman at FOXSports.com reports that Karl Malone may be headed back to his alma mater (and mine) to coach basketball. Goodman writes: Kerry Rupp, who is expected to be officially introduced later this week as Louisiana Tech’s new head coach, is close to bringing former Bulldogs and NBA star Karl Malone on board as an assistant coach.

PrinceÒ€ℒs Performance and the Wisdom of Solomon

The reviews of Prince’s Superbowl halftime show are already rolling in. The New York Times says: “Just when it seemed time to give up on that quaint ritual known as the halftime show, along comes Prince. His performance last night at Super Bowl XLI will surely go down as one of the most thrilling halftime shows ever; certainly the most unpredictable, and perhaps the best. ‘Dearly beloved,’ he whispered, intoning the famous first words of ‘Let’s Go Crazy.’ What followed was a dizzying demonstration. . .
