    Football is not for girls.

With the Superbowl approaching, there are many football stories circulating in the media. One story in particular caught my attention, and I have to say that it is rather disturbing. MSNBC.com reports: On 80 teams across the nation, women are donning pads, hitting hard, breaking bones and launching the ball in a way that gives an entirely new meaning to throwing “like a girl.” One of the female players explains how she got hooked on the game:

    41-14 / 41-14 : Another Perfect Palindrome

Is there any question which is the best conference in college football. This year, at least, it’s clear that the SEC is head and shoulders above the rest. LSU beat Notre Dame 41-14, and now Florida has drubbed #1 Ohio State 41-14 in the national championship game. The SEC is the biggest and the baddest, and we all know it. Ohio State is 0-8 against SEC schools in bowl games. Florida’s Reggie Nelson summed it up nicely after the championship game: “The SEC is too fast for the Big Ten.” Now that Ohio State has lost, that leaves Boise State as the only undefeated team in the country. But don’t…

A Heartbreaker for Romo and the ‘Boys

I have written a lot of football blogs this week and probably shouldn’t indulge in another one. But I can hardly let the Cowboys’ last game of the season go by without some comment. The Cowboys loss tonight was as ignominious as Boise State’s triumph earlier this week was glorious. The Cowboys had many opportunities to win this playoff game, but they did not take advantage of them. But the one blown opportunity that everyone will remember is Tony Romo’s bobbled snap on a game-winning field goal attempt with one minute left to play. The Associated Press summed things up like this: “The Pro Bowl quarterback who saved their season…

    NCAA Bowl Championship Series

The BCS computers have cranked out a title game, and USC will not be playing for the championship (USC, the team that won one national championship a couple years ago but for some reason continue to be regarded as a dynasty). Here is the full schedule for the upcoming NCAA bowl season. I am happy to see that LSU will be beating Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, though I would have preferred to have seen them put a licking on the non-dynastic USC in the Rose Bowl. But I suppose I can’t blame USC for not wanting to get embarrassed on their home turf by the Tigers. 🙂

    Goodbye, Agassi.

I watched Andre Agassi play his final match this past Labor Day weekend. It was bittersweet. Bitter, because it marks the end of an era. Sweet, because Andre has changed so much for the better over the years, and he leaves behind a great legacy to his sport.I feel like I grew up watching Agassi play tennis (or maybe I should say, grew up with him). When I played on my high school tennis team back in the late ’80’s, Agassi was the man. He was the James Dean of tennis. He was to tennis was rock ‘n roll is to music. He was the proverbial rebel who exuded cool.…

Farewell to a Great Champion, Andre Agassi

You know you’re getting old when sports stars your age begin to slow down and retire. I was reminded of this last week during the NBA finals as the commentators noted that the “elder” Shaq doesn’t play like he used to.Today Andre Agassi announced that he would be retiring from professional Tennis. He said that his last tournament would be this year’s U. S. Open. I feel like I grew up watching Agassi play tennis (or maybe I should say, grew up with him). When I played on my high school tennis team back in the late ’80’s, Agassi was the man. He was the James Dean of tennis. He…

The Refs Close-out the Mavs, 95-92

The story coming out of this depressing series will be all about Dwayne Wade’s rising star, but the real story should be about how the referees handed some close games to the Miami Heat. The Mavericks had their hands full with the Heat, and it’s a shame that they had to compete against the refs as well. I have to say that the officiating was disgusting at some critical moments, and it cost the Mavs a championship. That being said, the Mavs were not on top of their game. They could have played much better. If they had, their fortunes would not have been determined by the poor officiating. Congratulations…
