First Effort to Repeal Healthcare Rule Fails in Senate

From The Hill:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) wasted no time in blocking Republicans’ first attempt at offering legislation in the Senate to repeal the Health and Human Services (HHS) rule that would require employers to provide health insurance that includes contraceptives even if they are morally opposed to it…

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), however, accompanied the amendment to the floor and decried the “odious” outcome of the president’s decision…

“Republicans are trying to reaffirm that basic right [of freedom of religion],” said McConnell…

“Frankly, I never thought I’d see the day,” concluded McConnell. “[I] never thought I’d see the day when the elected representatives of the people of this country would be blocked by a majority party in Congress to even express their support for it.”

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;”

What doesn’t Reid get? Not to mention any of these so-called Senators. Crazy. And it’s gonna get crazier methinks.

This law is not just problematic for churches and religious groups. It restricts religious liberty for any business owner who has religious convictions against contraceptives and abortifacients. So the exemption would have to exempt every person who has a conscientious objection to paying for contraceptives and abortifacients.

Having said that, I think we are only witnessing the first of many battles with the new healthcare law. Americans aren’t accustomed to being forced by their government to purchase goods and services. As the law is implemented, I think we are going to see pushback from all kinds of Amricans, not just religious ones.

I think it is Reid’s goal in life to make the Democratic party look as shoddy, incompetent, intolerant, and generally lousy as he possibly can before he kicks the bucket.
