LSU lost to Florida on Saturday, just as I predicted they would last week. That’s all I have to say about that. In other news, my LA Tech Bulldogs beat UNLV decisively. Tech now moves to 5-0, and it’s our best start since the 1975 season. The AP poll now has Tech ranked at number 23. This is only the second time Tech has ever been ranked by the AP. The first time was near the end of the 1999 season when Tech was 8-2. The Coach’s poll has Tech ranked at number 24, and it’s Tech’s first time to appear on this poll.

Ted Kluck Tees-off on Throw-Back Uniforms
Ted Kluck goes on a tear about the throw-back uniforms that Nebraska and Wisconsin were sporting Saturday night. As usual, he puts things in a way that only Ted Kluck can. He writes: I know there are sadder things in the world than the state of college football uniforms. I know that there is world hunger, human trafficking, and those Sarah McLachlan dog-rescue commercials. All of those things are sadder than Nebraska’s alternate uniform. But still, perhaps there are other ways for schools to show that they have such an ungodly amount of money that they don’t know what to do with all of it. I’ve included a few ideas…

LA Tech Sitting Pretty; LSU Not So Much
My alma mater tore it up again today. The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs went to Virginia and beat them 44-38. Tech is now 4-0 for the first time since 1975. The win against Virginia is Tech’s second win over a BCS conference opponent. This is the fourth game in a row in which Tech scored over 40 points. They look like the real deal to me, and I believe they should be ranked in the top 25 this week. Looking down the road, Tech should be 5-0 with a top 25 ranking going into their game with Texas A & M in two weeks. And that’s a home game for us.…

Week 1 of College Football
Today was the first Saturday of college football—otherwise known as “the last week of scrimmages for title-contenders.” This is the week when all the big boys play weaker teams and waste all of our time. It makes for really unexciting football. Is anyone surprised, for instance, that Oklahoma State would pull out the “W” against Savannha State? No nail-biters in that one. It is, however, a bit shocking that they ran up the score 84-0! I guess after missing the title game last year with a single loss, Oklahoma State feels like it may need some style points for the final reckoning…but I digress. Congrats to Alabama-Michigan and Clemson-Auburn for…

The Bones Brigade
Stacy Peralta’s 2001 documentary “Dogtown and Z-Boys” covered the rise of professional skateboarding in the late 70’s in the pioneering Zephyr skating team. I really enjoyed the film even though it focused on the period just prior to my interest in the sport. Stacy Peralta’s new film, however, is a different story. It’s all about the “Bones Brigade”—the skate team sponsored by the Powell-Peralta skateboarding company, the team that was all the rage when I was still skateboarding. These were the days when Tony Hawk of the Bones Brigade and Christian Hosoi of Skull Skates were the best in the sport. They had an amazing rivalry and pushed the sport…

Mo Isom: First Female LSU Football Player?
For a long time, all I knew about Mo Isom was that she was a female athlete at LSU who had produced some entertaining light-hearted videos with some of LSU’s football stars. What I didn’t know (until last night) was her riveting backstory. I was not aware of the fact that this LSU homecoming queen had a real shot at becoming LSU’s first female place kicker. Nor did I realize that she was an outspoken Christian who had walked through a tremendous amount of turmoil in her own life. The jokester in the YouTube videos had betrayed none of those things.

What’s the deal with Lance Armstrong?
The news broke late last night that one of the most celebrated athletes of our time would be stripped of his championships. Lance Armstrong has said he would no longer defend himself from the United States Anti-doping Agency’s (USADA) claims that he used performance enhancing drugs to win his seven Tour de France titles. As a result, the USADA is vacating all of his wins.

Skip Bayless Censored Defending Tebow?
On Friday, Skip Bayless tweeted that he would be appearing on ESPN’s “First Take” and would be defending Tim Tebow from those who “persecute” him concerning his Christian faith. Twice during Bayless’ remarks, ESPN cut abruptly to commercial. Some are suggesting that ESPN was censoring Bayless’ remarks. I suppose that’s possible, but it seems unlikely to me. Why would they be so obvious if that’s what they were doing? Why would they allow some of his remarks if they wanted to suppress Bayless’ views? To me the censorship charge doesn’t seem to add up, but you can watch above and form your own conclusions. In spite of the interruptions, I…

Calling-out Michael Jordan
Thomas Lake of Sports Illustrated has written a column like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It’s an open letter to Michael Jordan rebuking Jordan for slandering his high school coach and for not being there for his old coach in a time of need. This is one of the most hard-hitting things I’ve ever read. I’ll leave it to the reader to decide whether or not Lake has a point.

ESPN’s Emotional Interview with Bobby Petrino
Bobby Petrino talks to ESPN and takes full responsibility for the affair that got him fired as the head football of the Arkansas Razorbacks. He says that he is now working on the most important thing—trying to salvage his marriage. This is gut-wrenching to watch. But I think it’s a helpful, cautionary tale for anyone with ears to hear.
