Colt McCoy Talks about Losing BCS Championship and Idolatry

Even for me as a fan, it really stung to watch my team lose the BCS national championship. I can only imagine what it would feel like as a player. Colt McCoy is the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Brown, but two years ago he led the Texas Longhorns to the BCS title game to play against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Both teams were undefeated, and it was a big game. It was the game that McCoy had been preparing for his whole life to play in. McCoy was driving the Longhorns down the field and looked like he was going to lead them into the endzone for the first…

Louisiana Tech Running Back Found Dead

Sad news from my alma mater. Tyrone Duplessis, a sophomore running back at Louisiana Tech University, passed away in his off-campus apartment this morning. The cause of death is unknown. Duplessis only played in two games last year after being out for a knee injury. He was 21 years old. RIP.

    Joe Paterno, Justice, and Eternity

I tried to write a reflection on the life of Joe Paterno yesterday. After spending a good bit of time on it, I gave up. There is so much that I admire about the man, and yet it all seems eclipsed by what happened at the end. Still, it seems unfair not to acknowledge all the good that came before the end. How do you put all of that into something that makes sense? Thank you, Barnabas Piper, for putting into words the feelings that so many of us are having about JoPa’s legacy: “Conflicted. Complex. Complicated.” Piper writes: There is no single side to the memory of Joe Paterno…

John 3:16 Showed Up Again in the Bronco’s Loss

John 3:16 showed up again in during last night’s game between the Broncos and the Patriots. But this time it wasn’t the number of Tebow’s passing yards (not by a long shot!) or a verse printed on his eye-black. It actually didn’t have anything to do with what happened on the field. Focus on the Family sponsored a commercial that appeared during a break in the second quarter. The ad features several children quoting the text of John 3:16. I thought it was very well done. Not only did it communicate the simple truth of the gospel in John 3:16, it also emphasized a pro-life message. The pro-life overtones were…

My Prediction about Broncos vs. Patriots

No matter what happens in tonight’s game against the Patriots, Tim Tebow’s Denver Broncos have given us something special this season. When Tebow took the starting job, the Broncos were in football purgatory. At 1-4, the Broncos organization had all but written-off the 2011 season to begin planning on how to rebuild for 2012. Tebow was given the starter job, but no one really expected him to do anything with it. The owners were placating the fans and using Tebow as a placeholder until the Broncos could find a franchise quarterback for next season. At least that was the conventional wisdom.

    Tebow 316

Lots of hay has been made about the connection between Tim Tebow’s 316 passing yards against Pittsburgh last Sunday and the Bible verse John 3:16. Tebow completed 10 passes, and that means he averaged 31.6 yards per completed pass. Ben Roethlisberger threw the one interception of the night, and it was on 3 down and 16 yards. Is it a sign or mere coincidence? There are many more 3:16 connections that others have pointed out, but Michael Medved highlights one that I hadn’t seen yet. Hebrew reads from right to left, which makes 316 into 613–the exact number of commandments in the Torah. I’m not saying it’s a sign. Just…

    Tim Tebow’s Fire

Back in the mid-80’s there was a really popular movie called “St. Elmo’s Fire,” and one of the songs from the movie soundtrack reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and received a Grammy nomination. The song was written and performed by John Parr and was titled “Man in Motion.” It’s quintessential 80’s fare, and there’s not a Gen X’er reading this that doesn’t know the song.
