No Pressure, Mr. President: Eric Metaxas in Rare Form

If you want to have a deep belly-laugh, go read Eric Metaxas’ interview with National Review Online. The interview is about Metaxas’ new book, which is about his invitation to speak at the national prayer breakfast last year (see video here, For the record I appreciate anyone who can work in a reference to Ruth Buzzi in a speech to the President). Metaxas parries the interviewer’s questions with humor and wit, and it’s a great read. Here’s a just a taste below. KATHRYN JEAN LOPEZ: The e-book version of your book is titled “Jesus Hates Dead Religion.” How can you claim to know what Jesus hates?  ERIC METAXAS: The Bible…

Was President George W. Bush a good president?

This is likely to turn some heads. Victor Davis Hanson disagrees with the conventional wisdom that George W. Bush was an awful president. He does this mainly by comparing President Bush to current President Barack Obama. Hanson argues that President Obama has either continued or benefitted from many of President Bush’s policies and that the comparison favors Bush. He concludes: “George W. Bush was not as dismal a president as the popular culture and media once assumed — a fact that will grow clearer as the age of Obama continues.”

Owners and Execs of Hobby Lobby Speak Out

The owners of Hobby Lobby, David and Barbara Green, are Christians. In the video above, they sit down with some of their executives and talk about what Hobby Lobby stands for and how they do business. In short, they try to incorporate Christian principles in the way that they lead their company. After watching this, I’m sure you’ll agree with me. This is the kind of business that we need more of in this country, not less. What we don’t need is for the government to put such people out of business by fining them over $1 million dollars a day. Yet that is exactly what is happening right now…

Remembering Chuck Colson’s call to civil disobedience

When the Obamacare’s abortion mandate was announced early last year, Chuck Colson was leading the way in explaining to Christians what was at stake. Not many Americans were paying attention then. But as the effects of the mandate have come to fruition with businesses like Hobby Lobby, more Americans are beginning to see how much of a threat the mandate really is to religious liberty. I think it’s work revisiting what Colson said about the abortion mandate and civil disobedience just two months before he passed away. The video is below. Here’s an excerpt:

Doug Wilson on Hobby Lobby’s showdown with the federal government

Doug Wilson comments about Hobby Lobby’s confrontation with the federal government over Obamacare’s abortion mandate. As many of you know, Hobby Lobby’s refusal to comply will cost them over $1 million dollars per day in federal fines, beginning yesterday. Wilson writes: Three things should be said about this showdown. First, high praise to the Greens who have refused to comply. Second, they should refuse to pay the fines, regardless of what happens in court. And third, about a hundred thousand people need to surround their house, facing out, if the ghouls from the government say they are going to do something about it. One comment made online (HT: Mark Tapson)…

    Do morning-after pills cause abortions?

In my previous post, I made the claim that the government will fine Hobby Lobby $1.3 million dollars per day until it complies with Obamacare’s abortion mandate. In the comments, I have received a good bit of push-back from readers claiming that the HHS mandate does not require coverage for abortifacient drugs. In particular, critics are telling me to “check my facts” and realize that morning-after pills are not abortifacient. This erroneous objection reveals that there is some confusion out there about what the “facts” really are. For this reason, I think a response is warranted.

Does anyone care what happens to Hobby Lobby?

I am astonished that more Americans aren’t in an uproar about what is happening to Hobby Lobby right now. As many of you know, Hobby Lobby filed a lawsuit earlier this year to try and get relief from Obamacare’s abortion mandate. The case is still pending appeal, but the Supreme Court just rejected their request for an emergency injunction. In response, the Christian owners of Hobby Lobby have said they have no intention to pay for the abortion-inducing drugs required by Obamacare. That means that beginning on January 1, the United States government will fine Hobby Lobby $1.3 million dollars per day until Hobby Lobby complies.

My contribution to the “Best of 2012” meme

It’s that time of year when all the “best of” lists appear ubiquitously across the internet. This post is my contribution to the genre, though I confess that I’m not so sure that the following list actually constitutes the “best of” DennyBurk.com. These rankings represent the most widely read posts of the year based on page views. Whether or not they are actually the “best of” remains to be seen. In any case, these ten were the ones that you were most interested in. I am very grateful for all of you who read the blog, and I am honored that you take the time to keep up with the…

How much will your taxes go up after fiscal cliff?

Reports say that most Americans will see their taxes increase after we go over the fiscal cliff next week (see impact here). As Congress continues to slog this one out with the President, the question most people are asking is how much their own taxes will go up after January 1. I’ve come across several websites that have calculators to help you figure the impact on your own bottom line. If you are interested, The Washington Times recommends the one at TaxFoundation.org. After plugging in your numbers, you may find yourself hoping for a last-minute deal to avert the cliff.
