The New York Times Advises Jefferson Bethke

David Brooks advises Jefferson Bethke on “How to Fight The Man” in The New York Times. It’s a thoughtful piece in which Kevin DeYoung’s critical blog post even gets a mention. I think the most stunning thing about Brooks’ article is the knowledge that someone at The New York Times is paying attention to intramural conversations among the Young, Restless, and Reformed (or should I say “DeYoung, Restless, and Reformed”). If the Old Gray Lady has noticed, it suggests that there is a bona fide cultural phenomenon afoot.

Denny, this is fascinating how much attention Jefferson is getting. If nothing else it provides a natural conversation starter to which most people can relate. Thanks for finding the article, I’m excited when the Times mentions Christianity without digging up some bozo straw man spokesperson. Glad to see YRR getting some print time. Although I must say, the DeYoung joke needs some true reformation. πŸ™‚

I don’t understand WHY this kid is getting so much attention. The initial video was mediocre and deserved to remain quietly obscure. Just because discussion is being had over it isn’t automatically a good thing.

Moreover, I think this article is pernicious, because it’s encouraging the likes of Bethke in their rebellion and expressing disappointment in their “folding” under the “pressure” of the establishment. Essentially, Brooks’ advice could be summed up as “Hey kid, you were going great there until you decided to be so darn teachable. You CAN be an awesome rebel, you just need more effective tools to do it. Here, let me give you a leg up so you can tear down the conservatives more quickly.” Let’s be honest, that’s what this is ALL about.
