The Morning of My Years

I first heard Allen Levi’s song “Morning of My years” when I was in my twenties. The song is about turning 40. After hearing the lyrics for the first time, I remember hoping that this would be my perspective when it came time for me to turn that page. It meant a lot to me then, and it still does now. Allen Levi was kind enough to allow me to share the song with you below. The album is old and a little hard to come by these days, but you can purchase a used copy here if you are interested.

There is one other song that also defines the day—“My Redeemer Is Faithful and True” by Steven Curtis Chapman. These lyrics have meant the world to me over the years, especially today.

Psalm 39:4-7
4 “LORD, make me to know my end,
And what is the extent of my days,
Let me know how transient I am.

5 “Behold, Thou hast made my days as handbreadths,
And my lifetime as nothing in Thy sight,
Surely every man at his best is a mere breath. Selah.

6 “Surely every man walks about as a phantom;
Surely they make an uproar for nothing;
He amasses riches, and does not know who will gather them.

7 “And now, Lord, for what do I wait?
My hope is in Thee.

Psalm 90:10-12
10 As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years,
Or if due to strength, eighty years,
Yet their pride is but labor and sorrow;
For soon it is gone and we fly away.

11 Who understands the power of Thine anger,
And Thy fury, according to the fear that is due Thee?

12 So teach us to number our days,
That we may present to Thee a heart of wisdom.

    I was just looking at the date and thought of you (I started writing this before midnight which means facebook didn’t remind me). My great uncle died yesterday leaving my great aunt as my grandfather’s only remaining sibling and now you and I are going to turn 40. While I have no gray or wrinkles (both with a little help), I absolutely love this song and I can’t help but think about what a perfect commentary it makes on these events and the fact that things tend to work out exactly as they should. I am looking at your facebook page now and seeing how wonderful your beautiful children and gorgeous wife Susan are for you. At the same time, I am looking back and forward on my life knowing that my extended childhood and many adventures on my own are equally perfect for me. In light of the foregoing, I’ve elected to crack my last bottle of DP and toast your birthday. No matter how crazy you drive me with this blog, know that I love and miss you, old friend.

    Denny, thanks so much for sharing. It’s amazing how fast the years go by. Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how Scripture says “So teach us to number our days, That we may present to Thee a heart of wisdom.”

    Wait until you say goodbye to the afternoon of your years. I did get to see my firstborn get married this year and I am grateful for every day. Life is fragile.
