Mohler and Piper on Obama’s Speech

Albert Mohler and John Piper agree that the brouhaha over President Obama’s speech to school children is much ado about nothing. In fact, both of them commend the speech’s message. Go read their remarks. Albert Mohler – “The Obama School Speech Controversy — What to Think?” John Piper – “I Hope My Daughter Hears the President’s Speech” John Piper – “I’ve Read the President’s Speech: Amazing”

    First Week of College Football

The first day of college football was greatness. For those of you who need a refresher, I pull for two teams. The LSU Tigers and the LA Tech Bulldogs. Yesterday, the Tigers beat the Huskies, and the Bulldogs lost to the Auburn Tigers. I saw the LSU game on ESPN, but didn’t get to see the Bulldogs on ESPNU (our cable provider doesn’t have it . . . but I digress). Initial thoughts on LSU. The Good: I like LSU’s new quarterback, Jordan Jefferson. He’s young, and he’s really good. The Bad: The Tigers really stunk-up the first half. The defense did not put enough pressure on the Huskie’s quarterback,…

SBTS Panel Confronts N.T. Wright’s View of Justification

This morning I participated in a panel discussion of N. T. Wright’s views on justification. The panel met during the Thursday chapel hour at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) in Louisville, Kentucky. Albert Mohler moderated the panel comprised of Tom Schreiner, Mark Seifrid, Brian Vickers, and me. The audio is available at both the Boyce College website and at the Southern Seminary site, or you can listen to it below. Or you can see the video here. [audio:http://www.sbts.edu/media/audio/fall2009/20090903panel.mp3] A colleague here at SBTS has e-mailed some items that we didn’t get to address during the discussion. His questions are in bold below, and my answers follow.

TNIV Is Dead . . . Sort of

On Tuesday Zondervan, Biblica and the Committee on Bible Translation issued a joint statement announcing a new revision of the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible to be released in 2011. They also announced that when the new edition is released, the TNIV will be taken off of the market. For those of you who are just joining this conversation and are wondering why this is important, let me bring you up to speed.

    Boyce College Dorm Meeting Worship

We just had an outstanding dorm meeting at Boyce College tonight. Dr. Russell Moore preached a message from James 1 (which will appear on the Boyce College blog tomorrow). Buck Buchanan is leading our worship band, and they are doing a bang-up job—really incredible. I hope they’ll record some of their music this year so that I can share it with you here. Until they do, please enjoy the album that the band produced last school year. You can download the entire album as a zip file here, or listen below.

    Choosing Thomas

Twenty weeks into their pregnancy, T. K. and Deidrea Laux found out that their son had Trisomy 13—a rare DNA abnormality. After being counseled that “terminating the pregnancy” would be an option, they chose life. In Deidrea’s own words: “We didn’t not terminate because we were hanging on to some sort of hope that there was a medical mistake or there was gonna be some sort of medical miracle. We didn’t terminate because he’s our son.” The Dallas Morning News has produced this video chronicling the birth and home-going of Thomas. The Laux’s are members of Paul Lindquist’s church (one of my former Criswell College students), and Paul is the…

    Tim Hawkins Goes Political

Tim Hawkins has previously appeared on this blog in his hilarious videos “Cletus Take the Reel” and “Chick-fil-a.” Hawkins’ latest video, however, is certain to cause some controversy because it is decidedly political. Watch it above for yourself. If you have time, you should also watch the golden oldies below.

McLaren: A Wolf in Wolf’s Clothing

As Brian McLaren has drifted further and further off the reservation, I have taken to using scare-quotes whenever referring to him as an “evangelical.” Truth be known, however, he’s no longer even a scare-quotes “evangelical.” If you think I’m overreacting, wait until you hear this. On August 13, McLaren announced on his blog that he would be observing the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. This is not a joke. He writes,

Does N. T. Wright Hold to Penal Substitution?

Lee Irons has an interesting post on N. T. Wright’s view of the atonement. You need to read the whole thing, but here’s the conclusion: “It looks more like a case of using orthodox labels to refer to a position that is not orthodox. At the end of the day, for Bishop Wright, sin is an impersonal evil force, not personal rebellion against God; sin has bad consequences, but does not elicit God’s punitive wrath against the sinner; and the cross is to be understood as some version of the Christus Victor theory in which Christ defeats evil by letting it do its worst to him, not as a penal…
