Tony Dungy comments on the scandal at Penn State: I believe the University had no other choice in this matter than to accept his resignation or force him to step down. I think they made the right move in ousting the President of the University as well. When something of this magnitude happens I think everyone in a leadership position is responsible… I also think this is a reminder to all of us that we have a responsibility to hold each other accountable, no matter what. It doesn’t matter if it is a subordinate, a co-worker or your boss. If something is taking place that is wrong, we have to…

Joe Paterno’s Firing Was Necessary and Right
Joe Paterno’s immediate firing was a sad, difficult decision on the part of Penn State’s board of trustees. And it was also the right decision. Children were horribly abused, and those with the power and moral authority to stop it sat on their hands.

How To Give an ETS Paper
Thanks to Justin Taylor for highlighting this excellent post by Fred Sanders, “How To Give an ETS Conference Paper.” All first-timers should read Sanders’ advice very carefully and get to work implementing these suggestions before next week. There’s still plenty of time. Here’s Sanders’ outline:

Jesus Christ and the Life of the Mind
Matt Hall had many positive things to say about Mark Noll’s book Jesus Christ and the Life of the Mind. He also has some critiques, and this one stood out to me. He writes, Noll’s book at times rings of the most strident and elitist forms of evangelical condescension. I’ll admit that as a Southern Baptist I easily grow weary of constant screeds against my denomination’s supposed pervasive intellectual backwardness and disinterest in developing anything even close to a respectable life of the mind. With all the respect to Noll I can muster, these caricatures are not only unhelpful but also tired and inaccurate. The last 20 years have seen…

The Scandal at Penn State
Michael Tomasky‘s piece in The Daily Beast about the scandal at Penn State is devastating. The crimes perpetrated were horrific. The failure to report the crimes was unconscionable. This article is hard to read, but it’s an unflinching look at the ugliness of it all. Read it here. Albert Mohler discussed the scandal yesterday on “The Briefing” and drew out a lesson for Christians. Listen to it below. Mohler Leads Discussion of the Historicity of Adam
Albert Mohler led a discussion in Southern Seminary’s chapel today about the historicity of Adam and the gospel. Panel members include Tom Schreiner, Jim Hamilton, Chad Brand, and Steve Wellun. You can watch above, listen below, or download here. [audio:http://www.sbts.edu/media/audio/fall2011/20111108-panel.mp3] My favorite line from the discussion comes from Jim Hamilton who argues that Peter Enns seeks to replace the beginning of the biblical story with evolution. Hamilton says that replacing the beginning of the biblical story with evolution is like replacing the first scene of “Star Wars” with the first scene from “Sleepless in Seattle.” It just doesn’t work because they are two different stories.

Should There Be an LSU-Bama Rematch?
The BCS standings came out tonight, and it had a little bit of a surprise in it: LSU (#1), OSU (#2), Bama (#3), and Stanford (#4). A one-loss Bama team stays on top of Stanford even though Stanford hasn’t lost a game. That means that Bama is still in the hunt. OSU and Stanford play two very losable games this coming Saturday. If those two teams were to lose, Bama would be right back at #2 next week, and that would pave the way for an LSU-Bama rematch for the national championship (if both teams win out).

The Thrilla in Tuscaloosa
I cannot say that I told you so. Because I didn’t. I really didn’t know who would win tonight’s game. You all know that I’m a big Tigers fan, but the analyst in me had a hard time picking a winner in advance. I thought that the teams were too evenly matched and that Alabama would probably have an edge because they were playing at home. But a lot of surprising things happened. No touchdowns, big turnovers, LSU holding Bama to under 100 yards rushing, and three missed field goals by Alabama. All of that added up to a close win for the Tigers. And it was a sweet victory.

Check-out the Pujols Biography

If you want to understand more about Pujols, his impact on the game, and his impact of other for kingdom purposes, then you should check out the biography written by Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth, Pujols: More Than the Game. Folks are already including Pujols’ name among the pantheon of greats: Ruth, Gehrig, Aaron, and Mays. Secret Church Is Tonight!
David Platt’s “Secret Church” meeting is tonight at the Church of Brook Hills in Birmingham, Alabama. The event will be simulcast to numerous locations including the campus of Southern Seminary. The theme for the night is “Family, Marriage, Sex, and the Gospel.” Here’s a description: Manhood. Womanhood. Marriage. Parenting. Singleness. Sex. Divorce. Homosexuality. Same-sex marriage. Polygamy. Pornography. Adoption. Abortion. Cultures around the world perceive each of these issues differently. So how does God’s Word address them? During Secret Church on November 4, 2011, we will explore how the gospel uniquely affects our understanding of family, marriage, sex, and host of related (and controversial) issues that are ultimately foundational for the…
