Newt Gingrich on the Wrong Side of Stem Cell Research

I have long thought that Newt Gingrich would never survive front-runner scrutiny were he ever to lead the pack. He has a checkered political past, and the media and his critics are not going to have any difficulty reminding everyone about it. Ramesh Ponnuru has a brief report about Gingrich’s record on embryonic stem cell research, and it is not good. On July 10, 2001, Gingrich called for President Bush to allow federal funding for this research. In Gingrich’s own words:

    Bowl Championship Stinkfest

Okay, I confess. I wrote my last post before College Game Day was over and all the upsets were complete. With Oklahoma, Oregon, Clemson, and other one loss schools still out there, it seemed unfair to give Alabama a second shot at an unbeaten LSU. But that was before the top one-loss schools completed their stinkfest on Saturday.

    Tim Tebow is True Grit

The Broncos were 1-4 before Tim Tebow took over five weeks ago. Since Tebow has been starting, they have gone 4-1 to improve to 5-5 on the season. He’s turning their season around, but he’s not doing it with passing. He was only 9 for 20 in the air tonight for 104 yards, and yet it doesn’t seem to matter. He’s all heart and grit, and the guy just knows how to win. That game tonight—especially the finish—was just amazing. Watch the game winning touchdown above. As I mentioned when he started this run, Tebow still has a lot of folks rooting against him. They are not simply rooting against…

Is Les Miles a Good Dad?

ESPN.com recently did an extended feature on Les Miles and his family. The life of a college football coach is typically dominated by the job. Consequently, these coaches are notoriously terrible family men. They simply don’t have the time to do it all. This story from ESPN.com takes a look at how Miles is measuring up as a family man. Here is an excerpt that gives the gist of what this article is all about:

Bob Costas’ Interview with Jerry Sandusky

[Watch full interview here] Bob Costas has a hard-hitting interview with alleged pedophile Jerry Sandusky. The video above is a small portion of the interview in which Sandusky admits showering with boys but denies any inappropriate contact. Because of the explicit nature of the conversation between Costas and Sandusky, I decided not to embed the full interview in this space. If you want to see the entire interview, you can watch it here. The interview was broadcast earlier this evening on NBC’s “Rock Center.” There are lots of reasons to doubt the truthfulness of Sandusky’s denial, but the most telling one comes near the end of the full interview when…

    Daniel Wallace Debates Bart Ehrman

On October 1 of this year, Daniel Wallace debated Bart Ehrman for the second time over the reliability of the text of the New Testament. The event was held at Southern Methodist University before the largest gathering ever to hear a debate over the New Testament text. A DVD of the event was produced by a film crew using four HD video cameras. It’s just over two hours long, and it really lays out the issues well. A trailer for the video is above. You can purchase the full video from The Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts. This is a great resource that you will want to…

    Farewell, NBA

It looks like the NBA has just been blown-up. Unless the courts intervene, we can probably say goodbye to the 2011-2012 season. The NBA Humpty Dumpty is broken apart right now, and all the kings horses and all the kings men are going to be hard-pressed to put him back together again. Here’s the story from The New York Times: Faced with a deal it could not accept, and a negotiating process that had reached a dead end, the National Basketball Players Association elected to disband Monday afternoon, thrusting the N.B.A. into chaos. The prospect of reviving the 2011-12 season now rests with the courts. Read the rest here.

    Remembering Dick Winters, American Hero

When I think about the definition of leadership, heroism, and bravery, I think about Dick Winters. He was the best of men. I noted earlier this year when he passed away at age 92, but I missed this excellent article about him that came out on Veteran’s Day. I am glad to read it a couple of days late and thought you might want to see it too. Here’s an excerpt:
