NBC reports Roe v. Wade decision (January 22, 1973)

This early report reveals that very few people realized how expansive the Roe decision would prove to be. On the same day that Roe was decided, the Supreme Court also handed down a decision on Doe v. Bolton, which in effect did away with any trimester limitations on abortion. Roe and Doe together ensured that a woman would have a right to abortion for any reason throughout all nine months of pregnancy. Since that time, Roe v. Wade has presided over the deaths of 55 million unborn children in America.

Evangelicals were caught flat-footed by the Roe decision. Only the Roman Catholics were speaking for life in those early days. As this report shows, the Catholics knew what was at stake and that the moral fight for the unborn was only just beginning. Forty years later, they have been proven right.

Very interesting. You bring up the Catholics, which brings up another important point, in that they are one of the few churches to speak out against birth control. A blog comment is too short a space to address such an issue, but it should be pointed out that until very recently, almost all mainline churches were united against birth control. Today, birth control is everywhere and you’d think it’s completely normal. We’re idiots if we think the issue of abortion and birth control aren’t somehow tied together.

Paul, as a convert to the Catholic faith( former Protestant) I wasn’t sure if I could align myself with the Church teaching regarding the use of contraceptives. I study a great deal, and prayed many prayers, pleading with God to make it clear what He would have me do. You know what happened? My heart changed. I stopped struggling with the teaching…for me, personally, I was settled in this new conviction.

I grew up in conservative churches. Some of which were considered Reformed. The topic of contraceptives was nonexistent. I think you’re right to assert that more churches need to explore this topic.

It is interesting to note just how fair and balanced the ancient report was on the story as compared to what it is today.

The mounting of opposition cannot be ignored even by those who think they have the power to run our nation as they please. There are times, when the masses really do have influence. It has taken so long, because the forces of propaganda, control, etc. have been used to the maximum to keep the tide of freedom and morality from flood stage.

We might also be idiots, because we reject out of hand the conspiracy theory of history and government. Could our institutions be the front for another source of control, a hidden group? And we must also remember that the Catholics in statements made long ago were determined to wipe out Republican Government (seems like I saw it in the Congressional Record (or cited from it) and referencing the Treaty of Ghent, resoliving the Napoleonic Wars. The Founding Fathers were deeply concerned about Rome and especially the Jesuits. I can remember when the Catholics from a near-by church threatened the people of my church with physical violence over the issue of a state school bus bill which would have given the Catholics free transportation to their schools at the tax payer’s expense, Now we are seemingly on the same side, but Catholics are in control of the Supreme Court and still making decisions, it would seem, that will undo our Republican Form of Government. could this be some long ago figured out way to demolish representative government and to do in the Christian Faith as the Reformation promulgated it long ago?
