Gabrielle Giffords Returns to House of Representatives

Gabrielle Giffords returned to the House of Representatives this evening for the first time since she was shot last January. When she stepped onto the floor, the House erupted in applause. It was a fantastic moment. The video is above.

I am an Arizonian but do not live in her district. Even when she was involved in the state legislature here she was known as a moderate and a consensus builder, respected on both sides of the aisle. She was probably not known to many outside the state until the horrific shooting, but she represented her district well and was very reasoned and passionate. I pray that she returns to her full capacity with an added dimension, as a believer in her Redeemer. Undoubtedly this experience has changed her in many ways, and with all the political hullabaloo in our times I think hers will be one of the more interesting personal stories for awhile to come. Even though I don’t agree with some of her pre-tragedy political positions I have prayed for her and would ask all other believers to do the same.

Rep. Giffords is of the Jewish faith. Her rabbi is Stephanie Aaron of Congregation Chaverim in Tucson, Arizona.

According to Rabbi Aaron, Rep. Giffords was devoted to the Torah teaching: ‘justice, justice shall you pursue’, and also was noted as someone who could speak to little children as well as the very aged in a way that said, ‘I listen to you. I hear you.’

Not bad values for someone who cares about her constituents.

Yes, that would be correct. I believer her paternal grandfather was a Holocaust survivor. After the shooting her staff worked hard to continue to serve the people of her district in the same way they did before, despite the personal losses they endured. They really are to be commended. I will always remember where I was, who I was with and what I was doing on January 8, 2011.
