    Leadership Lessons from RG3

I was disappointed when the Redskins knocked the Cowboys out of the playoffs last night. But I confess that—even though I’m a Cowboys fan—I’m finding it hard not to pull for Robert Griffin III. He’s a phenomenal talent, but there is much more to him than that. In an interview yesterday with The Washington Post, he gives us a glimpse into how he took the reins of leadership on his team and how he became a team captain as a rookie (virtually unheard of). It’s a story of leadership, character, and humility. It’s a case-study of proverbial wisdom fleshed-out in the life of a 22-year old.

A Cherry on Top of a Bad Football Season

The Dallas Cowboys are in the doldrums. LSU failed to avenge their loss to Alabama in last year’s championship game. My least favorite team in college football is going to win another BCS championship. And now this. My alma mater Louisiana Tech had the best season in the history of the school’s football program. They finished the season with the nation’s number one offense. They went 9-3 and spent several weeks in the BCS rankings. They beat two teams from automatic qualifying BCS conferences and came within a whisker of beating Texas A&M (final score 59-57). It was the absolute best season Tech has ever had. And yet they are…

Why Boys Shouldn’t Play Football with Girls

I saw this video yesterday that’s going viral on the internet right now. It’s a highlight reel of a 9-year old girl playing football with a bunch of boys. She looks pretty spectacular in the video as she blows past all the defenders and rumbles down the field for some long running plays. My little girls were nearby while I was watching the video, and I confess that I did not want them to see it. What she was doing was impressive, but it is not an aspirational model for little girls.

Final Thoughts about LSU vs. Alabama

In my prediction earlier this week, I said that Alabama would win and that there was no other team in the country that could touch the Crimson Tide. I was wrong about that. LSU dominated Alabama in every stat except the one that counts–the final score. LSU had few penalties. LSU never turned the ball over. Zach Mettenberger finally showed up and led the team to put up over 400 yards of offense on the best defense in the nation. It was really impressive. At the end of the day, however, Alabama had it when it counted–like all championship teams do.

    We Need a Fair Prayer

Years ago, there was a radio DJ in Little Rock, Arkansas named Craig O’Neal who used to do some of the funniest on-air prank calls that I’ve ever heard. O’Neal was an Arkansas Razorback fan, so he would often prank call coaches from opposing teams in advance of a Saturday game. When Arkansas entered the SEC and was preparing to play Alabama for the first time, O’Neal was able to get one of the Alabama assistant coaches on the line. O’Neal pretended to be the preacher who would be offering the invocation at the game. It’s a classic. Listen below. For those of you who were wondering, the answer is…

One More Reason to Pull for LSU

Since 1984, the LSU-Alabama rivalry has served as a predictor of the Presidential election. For the last 28 years, whenever Alabama wins, the Democratic candidate wins. Whenever LSU wins, the Republican candidate wins. If that doesn’t make you an LSU fan, nothing will. It’s your patriotic duty to root against Bama! Geaux, Tigers!

My Prediction about LSU vs. Alabama

I usually save my football posts for the weekend, but everybody’s been asking me what I think about the big game this Saturday. So I offer my humble prediction today about who will win the LSU-Alabama game. It is no surprise to any of you that I will pulling for the LSU Tigers. I’m still not over that national championship game (I don’t think I’ll ever get over it), and I will be rooting for the Tigers to stick it to Saban and the Tide. Having said that, I’m going to offer you my honest analysis, not the Pollyannaish musings of a fan. Here goes.

The Armstrong Scandal Is Worse Than Merely Doping

NBC’s “Rock Center” recently covered Lance Armstrong’s fall from grace, and they show that the scandal is much worse than merely doping. The lengths that Armstrong went to in order to cover up his misdeeds were much worse than the doping itself. Unfortunately, reporters were all too willing to overlook eyewitness testimony in those early years, and their soft coverage enabled the scandal to continue for as long as it did.

Alabama Player Body Slams Mizzou Running Back

In case you missed it last week, Alabama player LaMichael Fanning body slammed a running back from Missouri. In professional wrestling, the move is called the “suplex.” Fanning very easily could have broken the guy’s neck and paralyzed him. Watch the video above, and you’ll see. I don’t know how this kid got off without being suspended, but he did. The NCAA didn’t do anything, and Nick Saban said he was handling the discipline internally. I guess Fanning had to run some laps or something. Unbelievable.
