Well, it finally happened. LSU lost to Auburn today (24-17) in a battle of the unbeatens. I knew it was bound to happen eventually. Les Miles had already used up all of his nine lives, and his luck was bound to run out. It finally did tonight. Auburn is too good and LSU too sloppy for it to have come out any other way. LSU has a ton of talent, but it is underutilized. Jarrett Lee has just as much talent as Matt Mauck and Matt Flynn (both of whom led LSU to national championships), but LSU doesn’t have an offensive scheme to exploit his passing ability. In fact, LSU…

Cowboys Blame Game
Who do you blame for the Cowboys’ abysmal loss to the Vikings and for their 1-4 start to the 2010 season? Tony Romo? He actually played pretty well tonight (except that one game-killing interception). Wade Phillips? You could make a case, but he’s not really the guy at the top of the totem pole. Personally, I like Bob Sturms’ answer to the question:

Lackluster LSU
Far be it from me to say anything amiss about the alma mater of me mater and pater—McNeese State University. Nevertheless, LSU should have blown them out tonight, but they didn’t. Instead, LSU struggled against a 1-AA school that had a record of 2-3. LSU ended up winning, and the win gives them their first 7-0 start since 1973. But don’t be surprised when people express frustration with Les Miles this week. The Tigers looked lackluster and sloppy, and fans know that LSU will get embarrassed if they play that way against Auburn, Alabama, and Arkansas. With losses from Ohio State and Nebraska, LSU will certainly move up at least…

LSU Turns a Corner
The Gators think they have the win after a touchdown that puts Florida ahead 29-26 late in the fourth quarter. LSU gets the ball back with just over three minutes left in the game. The Tigers drive down the field and get stopped on fourth down on Florida’s 45 yard line. With everything on the line, the Mad-hatter Les Miles calls a fake field goal. It works! The Tigers get the first down to keep the drive alive. After a few plays, Jarret Lee throws the ball into the endzone for the win. What an unbelievable game!

I can’t believe they’re 5-0
LSU beat Tennessee today with one of the most embarrassing and inept finishes I’ve ever seen. If you missed it, watch the whole thing above. It’s pretty ridiculous, but somehow they pulled out the win.

Boise State…Wow!
If you missed Boise State’s victory over Virginia Tech, you missed the best game of opening weekend (and perhaps of the entire season). Everything was on the line for Boise State. They had to win this game to remain in the national championship conversation. On the road against a stadium filled with Virginia Tech fans, they somehow pulled out a victory in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Games like this one are why I love college football. Unbelievable. ESPN has the replay here. Now the debate begins. If Boise State stays undefeated for the rest of the season, do they deserve a shot at the BCS title? Some…

New Ken Burns Documentary on Baseball
I just heard that Ken Burns has a new documentary on baseball that will be airing on PBS later this month. According to PBS’s website, it’s a two-part, four-hour documentary titled “The Tenth Inning,” and it comprises a new chapter in Burns’s Emmy-winning 1994 series titled “Baseball.” This latest chapter tells “the tumultuous story of the national pastime from the 1990s to the present day. Introducing an unforgettable array of players, teams and fans, the film showcases the era’s extraordinary accomplishments and heroics – as well as its devastating losses and disappointments.” There’s a trailer that you can view on PBS’s website. It’s set to air September 28 & 29…

Not an Impressive Start for LSU
I’m glad that LSU won tonight, but winning a squeaker against North Carolina’s second string is not very impressive. They will have to do a lot better than this in the coming weeks, or it will be a long season. The Tiger defense just rolled over in the second half, and the offense wasn’t very offensive. They are fortunate to have pulled out a win after having such a poor finish.

LSU Poised for Smackdown vs. Tarheels
LSU’s season opener is on Saturday night. With this news today, they are poised to put the hurt on the North Carolina Tarheels. Twelve North Carolina players–including 6 starters–have been ruled ineligible to play in the season opener versus the Tigers.

The WAC just got Whacked!
The beleaguered conference of my alma mater just took another hit. The AP reports that Fresno State and Nevada are leaving the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) for the Mountain West Conference (MWC). The WAC’s highest profile team, Boise State, announced earlier this summer that it was leaving for the MWC as well. There are rumors that BYU might be joining the WAC for all sports except football. That would leave the WAC with only six teams—two teams short of the NCAA minimum to have a conference. After losing our head coach this year to the University of Tennessee, this news comes as another blow to the program. For the sake…
