    One Shining Moment

Well, the tournament is over. Both teams in the final game played horribly. The only thing that could have redeemed this pitiful display would have been a Cinderella victory by Butler. But that didn’t happen. UConn lifted the stink enough in the second half to pull out the win. As I write this, the trophy presentation is gearing up, and some guy behind the scenes is cuing up the “One Shining Moment” highlight reel from the 2011 tourney. I wonder if any of you out there in internet land will agree with me that “One Shining Moment” is a really bad soundtrack for the highlight reel. Which brings me to…

    Meet Jacob Tucker

Move over Spud Webb. Jacob Tucker is a 5’10” guard from Illinois College (Division III), and on Thursday he won the NCAA slam dunk contest. That’s right. He flew over, out-dunked and outdazzled all the Division I bigshots. I don’t know what else to say. This guy is amazing. The winning dunks are above. Some bonus dunks are below.

Strachan on the Morality of Football

Owen Strachan has a serious article at First Things critiquing football as an overly violent sport that causes some players permanent physical disabilities or even death. He concludes: “No one enjoys legalism, but if the costs of football outweigh its benefits—and they well may—it may be best for many to take a step back from it and point youths to concentrate on less violent sports. Perhaps we should go so far as to consider legislation regarding the physical safety of football players on such matters as concussions. Ideas will vary as to what such a measure might look like. However, such a tangible measure, borne of respect for human dignity…

    Cam Newton Speech

In his Heisman acceptance speech earlier this evening, Cam Newton delivered what will go down as one of the most unintentionally ironic lines ever uttered: “My parents do a lot of things behind the scenes that go unnoticed.” Note to Auburn fans: I’m not presuming that Cam Newton is guilty of anything. The NCAA investigation is ongoing, and I think everyone should allow the guy the presumption of innocence. In spite of the investigation, I’m happy to offer congratulations to Mr. Newton. You can watch the rest of the speech in the video above. The announcement of the award begins at about 1:30.

    The Battle of Ineptitude

LSU really laid and egg tonight against Arkansas. But it was an ugly game for both teams. I’m a little bit astonished at the headlines (here and here) suggesting that Arkansas has now made its case for a BCS bowl. Did these reporters watch this game? It was just one mistake after another. Mallet threw I don’t know how many interceptions. Arkansas’s punter fumbled a punt deep in their own territory. They looked terrible. Fortunately for the Hogs, they were only slightly less terrible than LSU. Neither of these teams looked BCS worthy. I guess we’ll see how things shake-out next week. P.S. Jim Hamilton is a sorry dog (or…

    Ultimate Football Fake Out

The Driscoll Middle School football team in Corpus Christi, Texas pulled off an incredible trick play over the weekend, and the video is becoming a YouTube sensation. As Hannibal Smith would say, I love it when a plan comes together!

    LSU Rolls-over the Tide

If you missed LSU’s victory over Alabama today, you missed a good one. I’m still astonished that LSU figures out how to win these tough, tough games. After the loss to Auburn a couple of weeks ago, I wasn’t very optimistic about this game. But somehow, they did it. Jordan Jefferson actually completed some passes today, and LSU’s offense came up with a couple of bursts when they needed it in the second half. What I saw today proved that if LSU had a consistent quarterback, they would probably be number one in the nation. But then again, if a frog had wings, he wouldn’t bump his bottom when he…

    The Cowboys Are So Done

I don’t remember when I’ve ever seen the Cowboys lower than they are now. Steve Young’s assessment in the video above is right on. The Giants spotted Dallas 20 points in the first half, and the Cowboys still couldn’t win. No one rose to the occasion after Romo went down. There’s no leadership at all on this squad. Stick a fork in them because they are done. In the words of Forest Gump, that’s all I have to say about that.
