From NBC Philadelphia: It took the prosecution five weeks to present their case against West Philly abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell and it took defense attorney Jack McMahon a couple of hours to knock a big hole through a critical part of their argument. Three first-degree murder charges were dropped against Gosnell after McMahon argued that “there is not one piece…of objective, scientific evidence that anyone was born alive” at Gosnell’s clinic.

Does President Obama still oppose laws that protect the lives of newborn infants?
In Savanah Guthrie’s recent interview with President Obama, she asked him about the Gosnell trial. You can watch above to see how the brief exchange went, or you can read the transcript below:

President Obama takes no position on protecting the lives of live-born children
In today’s press briefing, White House press secretary Jay Carney took a series of questions about the Kermit Gosnell case (see above). One reporter had the temerity to ask Carney some tough questions about President Obama’s repeated opposition to laws that would protect the lives of children who survive an attempted abortion. Carney’s answers were baffling. Carney repeated the President’s support for a woman’s right to choose. When the reporter pressed him on whether or not the President would support “common sense reform” to protect the lives of live-born children, Carney refused to give an answer. Is it really that hard simply to say, “The President supports protecting the lives…

Sandy Hook and Gosnell provoke questions about rights
In an article for PhillyBurbs.com, reporter J. D. Mullane describes what he saw at the Gosnell trial. He witnessed some of the most grisly testimony imaginable, and yet he also saw an empty press pool area. The court had set aside about 40 seats for reporters. Still, it stayed virtually empty. Mullane ponders why hardly any reporters showed up to cover the trial. I asked one of the court staff why so few are interested. “If you’re pro-choice, do you really want anybody to know about this,” he said, motioning to the filthy medical equipment set up in the courtroom. It’s a good point. As saturation coverage of the Sandy…

Anderson Cooper’s Coverage of Gosnell Atrocities
Anderson Cooper did a substantive report and analysis of Dr. Kermit Gosnell’s trial for murder. I’m hoping this is the first of many stories that we see on television. This report is good, but the broadcast networks need to cover this as well. Part one is above, and part two is below.

Krauthammer explains why news outlets are ignoring infanticide
The National Review Online has posted Charles Krauthammer’s comments on the media blackout of Kermit Gosnell’s murder trial. Among other things, Krauthammer says this: On this, I would think there would be unanimity in the country, and the reason that there is resistance, against either outlawing or heavily regulating [abortion] is because the pro-choice people imagine that any regulation, at any level, at any kind, is the beginning of the end of abortion rights. I think there is room for a national consensus on this. In other words, pro-choicers believe abortion rights to be so sacrosanct that they cannot acknowledge Gosnell’s crimes because it might lead to a curtailing of…

Fifteen-year old girl helped kill live-babies in Gosnell’s abortion clinic
There is more grisly testimony emerging from the Gosnell trial (see previous post). Business Insider reports: Former clinic worker Ashley Baldwin, who’s now 22, testified that she helped Gosnell perform abortions and saw five aborted babies moving and breathing, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. One baby even screamed, Baldwin said.

Why the media don’t want you to see the horror of Gosnell’s crimes
Last January, I posted the above documentary about Dr. Kermit Gosnell and his murderous late-term abortion clinic. My hope then was that the video might go viral and attract widespread public attention. My thought was that if we could just put this story before as many people’s eyes as possible, they might reconsider their indifference about the horror that unfolds every day in abortion clinics around the country. I’m not sure that the documentary has yet had that impact.

Attorney General sues florist for refusing to provide flowers for a same-sex wedding
Attorney General Bob Ferguson of Washington State is suing Arlene’s Flowers & Gifts for refusing to provide flowers for a same-sex wedding. The owner of the flower shop, Barronelle Stutzman, says she is a Christian and cannot in good conscience participate in a same-sex wedding ceremony. Nevertheless, Attorney General Ferguson says the refusal is illegal and told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer the following:

Jim Wallis’ less-than-prophetic voice on gay marriage
In case you haven’t heard, progressive “evangelical” leader Jim Wallis has recently come out in favor of gay marriage—sort of. In two separate interviews—one with The Huffington Post and another with Jonathan Merritt—he was asked about gay marriage. In both interviews, he gave a meandering response that sounded like support for gay marriage. Also in both interviews, the interviewers had to follow-up with a clarifying question, “Just to be clear, do you now support gay marriage.” He answered in the affirmative both times. What’s going on here? Why is Wallis being so cagey about his newfound support for gay marriage? I don’t know the man’s motives, but I can think…
