SCOTUS To Rule on Gay Marriage by June?

The Los Angeles Times reports that we should find out this week whether or not the Supreme Court will rule on gay marriage. Earlier this year, a lower court overturned “Proposition 8,” California’s ban on gay marriage. Traditional marriage supporters have appealed that decision, and the Supreme Court must decide whether or not to hear their appeal.

Report Says Abortions Down 5% Nationwide

The Associated Press reports that the number of abortions is down 5% nationwide. This good news is somewhat mitigated by the fact that there are still about 1 million abortions performed every year in the United States. We can be thankful for the small decrease in the number of abortions, but make no mistake. An incalculable human slaughter continues. The report is quick to credit birth control use as a primary reason for the decrease in abortions, not the passage of recent laws restricting abortions. There’s no statistical evidence in the report to support this claim. Nevertheless, the author clearly suggests that laws restricting abortion are ineffective. This is a…

Religious Liberty Dies at Hobby Lobby

Here’s the bad news from The Beckett Fund website: Today, a federal court denied a request to halt enforcement of the abortion pill mandate which forces the Christian-owned-and-operated Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., to providethe “morning after pill” and “week after pill” in their health insurance plan, or face crippling fines up to $1.3 million dollars per day… Hobby Lobby is the largest and first non-Catholic-owned business to file a lawsuit against the HHS mandate.  The Green family has no moral objection to the use of preventive contraceptives and will continue covering preventive contraceptives for its employees. However, the Green family’s religious convictions prohibit them from providing or paying for the…

Banning Public Nudity in San Francisco…Sort of

San Francisco is preparing to pass a law that would prohibit nudity in most public places. According to the Associated Press, lawmaker Scott Wiener spearheaded the effort after “constituents complained about the naked men who gather in a small Castro plaza most days and sometimes walk the streets au naturel. He persuaded his colleagues last year to pass a law requiring a cloth to be placed between public seating and bare rears, yet the complaints have continued.”

The Armstrong Scandal Is Worse Than Merely Doping

NBC’s “Rock Center” recently covered Lance Armstrong’s fall from grace, and they show that the scandal is much worse than merely doping. The lengths that Armstrong went to in order to cover up his misdeeds were much worse than the doping itself. Unfortunately, reporters were all too willing to overlook eyewitness testimony in those early years, and their soft coverage enabled the scandal to continue for as long as it did.

California Outlaws Therapies Aimed at Changing the Sexual Orientation of Minors

On Saturday, California became the first state to ban therapy practices that attempt to change the sexual orientation of minors. The new law states, Under no circumstances shall a mental health provider engage in sexual orientation change efforts with a patient under 18 years of age… Any sexual orientation change efforts attempted on a patient under 18 years of age by a mental health provider shall be considered unprofessional conduct and shall subject a mental health provider to discipline by the licensing entity for that mental health provider. This means that even if a minor wants help in battling same-sex desires, mental health professionals in California are not allowed to…

Death Threats for Opposing Gay Parenting

Rupert Everett is gay actor who is probably best known for his role in the 1998 film My Best Friend’s Wedding. He recently made some remarks against gay parenting that have resulted in threats on his life. What exactly did he say? The Huffington Post has his exact words: [My mom] thinks children need a father and a mother and I agree with her… I can’t think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads… Some people might not agree with that. Fine! That’s just my opinion. The article goes on to talk about the backlash that Everett is getting from gay rights groups. They are predictably…

Delaware the First State to Outlaw Spanking?

Delaware just passed a law that looks to be problematic for parents that spank their children. Here’s what the law says: “Abuse” means causing any physical injury to a child. . . “Physical injury” to a child shall mean any impairment of physical condition or pain. Because the law defines “physical injury” as anything that causes “pain,” it appears that Delaware has effectively become the first state in the Union to outlaw spanking. The law goes on to say that anyone causing “pain” to a child under the age of 3 years could be charged with a felony. Here are the specifics from the Home School Legal Defense Association:
