Better To Honor God Than To Win

You all know Jim Hamilton from his blockbuster book God’s Glory in Salvation through Judgment. What you may not know is that Jim is an outstanding athlete who once played baseball for the Arkansas Razorbacks. He’s a competitor, and he loves Christ. That is why I love this personal reflection from Jim about honoring God in sports. It’s a good word for a day when some people are questioning the compatibility of sports and Christianity. Here’s a snippet, but you should really read the whole thing.

    Hunting Bambi

The inimitable Mark Coppenger on the HHS mandate: I once heard Frederica Mathewes-Green say that every child born after 1973 was a “survivor.” That was the year that Roe v. Wade declared “open season” on the contents of the womb. But it appears the license to hunt Bambi was not enough. Now the government is making sure you have a rifle. Read the rest here.

Swallowing the Feminist Narrative Hook, Line, and Sinker

How many of you saw the news last week about outraged congresswomen who stormed out of the congressional hearing on the contraceptive mandate? I did. I also saw Nancy Pelosi and a host of others angrily denouncing the fact that there were no women represented on the panel. So they decried the panel as a sham and as a threat to women’s rights. Essentially, they were saying this: This hubbub about the HHR mandate is just a bunch of men trying to deprive women of their contraceptives. Women beware! They’re coming for your contraceptives too! Nevermind that the claim was untrue. These pro-choice politicians found willing partners in the mainstream…

Every Worship Leader Needs to Read This

Here is a word that every worship leader on the planet needs to hear. James Smith, philosophy prof at Calvin College, is concerned that the church has unwittingly encouraged worship leaders to import musical practices into Christian worship that are detrimental to congregational worship. So he expounds upon three bits of advice to counteract this trend:

    The Gospel and Homosexuality

This past weekend, I spoke to college students attending the “Give Me an Answer” conference on the campus of Southern Seminary. My topic was “The Gospel and Homosexuality,” and after my talk the students were eager to find resources to help them think more biblically about this issue. I told them that I would provide a short list here, and what follows is the fulfillment of that promise. This list is by no means exhaustive, but it will get you started. Four questions about the gospel and homosexuality are below, and each resource is listed under the question that it answers.

The Look of Lust Is in Your Eyes

Hershael York is a preaching professor at Southern Seminary, and he delivered a message in chapel yesterday that is worth your time to listen to. The text is Matthew 5:27-30, and the message is titled “The Look of Lust Is in Your Eyes.” Dr. York argues, among other things, that gouging out eyes and cutting off hands may not be figural. If it comes down to it, he says that it would be better to lose the body parts than to be enslaved to sin. To put it in his terms, “Sin never can survive a cost-benefit analysis.” [audio:http://www.sbts.edu/media/audio/spring2012/20120214-york.mp3] You can listen to the message above, download the audio here,…

Lin Leads Knicks to 7th Straight Win

The Knicks snagged their 7th straight win tonight with Lin as a starter. I know the last couple of weeks have been all about Jeremy Lin, but you’re missing his contribution if you’re only counting the points he puts up on the board. Lin is leading these guys to play team ball—the kind of ball that led the Mavericks to a championship last year. Tonight’s stats bear this out. Lin only scored 10 points, but he had 13 assists. No player for the Knicks had more than 19 points, yet the team still managed to put 100 points on the board. In a league filled with selfish superstars, this new…

    Blogging and Controversy

Timothy Dalrymple offers some apt reflections on blogging and controversy. He outlines five things to think about before jumping into the latest viral fray: 1. Am I responding to a controversy or creating one? 2. Have I fully digested and assessed this issue? 3. Do I really have anything important to add to the conversation? 4. Assess your motives. 5. Remember the power of compassion. Bloggers, this is worth your time to read the whole thing. (HT: Tim Challies)
