Response to Donald Miller on Abortion

Christianity Today recently interviewed Blue Like Jazz author Don Miller about his invitation to pray at the Democrat National Convention. CT pressed Miller on his political views vis a vis abortion. In his response, Miller reflects on how he thinks a Republican President and Congress have fallen short on the issue of abortion: “As we elect a Republican House and Senate, and as we elect Republican leadership in the executive branch, we see very little changes on that issue. We’re electing someone who agrees with us on abortion, being sort of a tragedy in our country, and yet can’t get anything done. . . The executive branch doesn’t have that…

First Female Preacher at Irving Bible Church

Last May, I wrote about the egalitarian shift at Irving Bible Church (IBC). The elders had just completed an 18-month long study and had concluded that they would allow women to preach in their church. Yesterday, IBC had a female preacher fill the pulpit for the first time since the elders’ findings were published. The preacher’s name was Jackie Roese. Sam Hodges of the Dallas Morning News wrote Saturday about the changes at IBC, and he quoted from my forthcoming JBMW editorial on this topic. But the best lines from the entire news article come from Tommy Nelson, pastor of Denton Bible Church: The Rev. Tom Nelson of Denton Bible…

    Nastia Liukin Returns to Dallas

This one is for all the die-hard Olympic fans. My wife took our two daughters to see Nastia Liukin’s return to Dallas from Beijing on Thursday. There was a big crowd at the DFW airport, but my wife was nevertheless able to snap a pretty decent shot (see below). The Dallas Morning News has a story on Liukin’s reception. There is also a video of her remarks.

    Obama’s Record on ‘Born-Alive Infants’

The video is self-explanatory and hardly needs any comment from me. But I would nevertheless add some caveats. 1. There is a dramatization of a baby being left to die. It’s not real, nor is it a gruesome depiction. But it is disturbing nonetheless. 2. There are some other personalities featured in this video, and I do not want readers to think that my posting this video means I endorse them. I’m thinking in particular of Alan Keyes. 3. I don’t know anything about the group that produced this video. The only reason I’m posting it is so that you can see and hear the testimony of Jill Stanek, who…

    Obama’s Glib One-Liner about Abortion

From John Fund in today’s Wall Street Journal: ‘Mr. Obama’s stand on the issue [of abortion] is significant. The federal “Born Alive Infant Protection Act” sailed through the Senate in 2001 on a vote of 98 to 0. The bill was supported by Senator Barbara Boxer, the body’s leading pro-choice spokeswoman, and was not opposed by the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League. By getting his facts wrong, Mr. Obama is now in the difficult position of trying to explain why he voted against a bill that the legislative record shows addressed infanticide rather than abortion.’ “Obama’s Abortion Position? It’s a One-liner” – by John Fund (Wall Street Journal)

    Political Priorities

Last week, the Washington Post had a story titled “GOP Loyalty Not a Given For Young Evangelicals.” In it, the leader of the Southern Baptist Environment and Climate Initiative has a statement about political priorities.

    Is Barack Obama Lying?

Either Senator Barack Obama is lying about his record on abortion, or he has the worst memory of all time. In making this suggestion, I am not trying to be hyperbolic or unnecessarily caustic. It’s just hard to believe that his memory could be that bad. In an interview with CBN after the Saddleback Presidential Forum, Senator Obama denied that he had ever opposed a law that would protect infants who survive botched abortions. Obama even went so far as to say that those who claim otherwise are “liars.” “I hate to say that people are lying, but here’s a situation where folks are lying. I have said repeatedly that…

Saddleback Forum: This Round Goes To McCain

If I had to rate this one, I would say that McCain came out on top at the Saddleback Presidential Forum. His answers were clear and were made more compelling by his allusions to his time in a Vietnamese prison camp. Rick Warren did a lot better than I thought he would in his interviews. In a traditional debate, the candidates get asked different questions by the moderators, and oftentimes one candidate gets asked tougher questions than his opponent. In the Saddleback forum, each candidate got asked the same questions, so the viewer was able to compare apples to apples. I thought Warren’s format was brilliant on this point. One…
