Karl Malone To Coach at Louisiana Tech

Jeff Goodman at FOXSports.com reports that Karl Malone may be headed back to his alma mater (and mine) to coach basketball. Goodman writes:

Kerry Rupp, who is expected to be officially introduced later this week as Louisiana Tech’s new head coach, is close to bringing former Bulldogs and NBA star Karl Malone on board as an assistant coach.

Prince’s Performance and the Wisdom of Solomon

The reviews of Prince’s Superbowl halftime show are already rolling in. The New York Times
says:

“Just when it seemed time to give up on that quaint ritual known as the halftime show, along comes Prince. His performance last night at Super Bowl XLI will surely go down as one of the most thrilling halftime shows ever; certainly the most unpredictable, and perhaps the best. ‘Dearly beloved,’ he whispered, intoning the famous first words of ‘Let’s Go Crazy.’ What followed was a dizzying demonstration. . .

Football is not for girls.

With the Superbowl approaching, there are many football stories circulating in the media. One story in particular caught my attention, and I have to say that it is rather disturbing. MSNBC.com reports:

On 80 teams across the nation, women are donning pads, hitting hard, breaking bones and launching the ball in a way that gives an entirely new meaning to throwing “like a girl.”

One of the female players explains how she got hooked on the game: Continue Reading →

41-14 / 41-14 : Another Perfect Palindrome

florida.jpg

Is there any question which is the best conference in college football. This year, at least, it’s clear that the SEC is head and shoulders above the rest.

LSU beat Notre Dame 41-14, and now Florida has drubbed #1 Ohio State 41-14 in the national championship game. The SEC is the biggest and the baddest, and we all know it.

Ohio State is 0-8 against SEC schools in bowl games. Florida’s Reggie Nelson summed it up nicely after the championship game: “The SEC is too fast for the Big Ten.”

Now that Ohio State has lost, that leaves Boise State as the only undefeated team in the country. But don’t expect them to be voted #1 in the AP poll. Florida will be the undisputed national champion. Continue Reading →

A Heartbreaker for Romo and the ‘Boys

romo.jpgI have written a lot of football blogs this week and probably shouldn’t indulge in another one. But I can hardly let the Cowboys’ last game of the season go by without some comment. The Cowboys loss tonight was as ignominious as Boise State’s triumph earlier this week was glorious.

The Cowboys had many opportunities to win this playoff game, but they did not take advantage of them. But the one blown opportunity that everyone will remember is Tony Romo’s bobbled snap on a game-winning field goal attempt with one minute left to play. The Associated Press summed things up like this: “The Pro Bowl quarterback who saved their season ended it, too.” Continue Reading →

Perfect Palindrome: 41-14

russell_412.jpgThe perfect palindrome is not “Madam, I’m Adam” or “Poor Dan is in a droop.” It’s “41-14.” Why 41-14? Because that is the final score of LSU’s shellacking of Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Sweet!

Maybe the Best Bowl Game Ever

boisestate.jpgWhen’s the last time you saw a team win a bowl game off of a hook and lateral play? That’s precisely what Boise State did in their victory over the University of Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Continue Reading →

NCAA Bowl Championship Series

The BCS computers have cranked out a title game, and USC will not be playing for the championship (USC, the team that won one national championship a couple years ago but for some reason continue to be regarded as a dynasty).

Here is the full schedule for the upcoming NCAA bowl season. I am happy to see that LSU will be beating Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, though I would have preferred to have seen them put a licking on the non-dynastic USC in the Rose Bowl. But I suppose I can’t blame USC for not wanting to get embarrassed on their home turf by the Tigers. :) Continue Reading →

Goodbye, Agassi.

Andre AgassiI watched Andre Agassi play his final match this past Labor Day weekend. It was bittersweet. Bitter, because it marks the end of an era. Sweet, because Andre has changed so much for the better over the years, and he leaves behind a great legacy to his sport.I feel like I grew up watching Agassi play tennis (or maybe I should say, grew up with him). When I played on my high school tennis team back in the late ’80’s, Agassi was the man. He was the James Dean of tennis. He was to tennis was rock ‘n roll is to music. He was the proverbial rebel who exuded cool.

It’s been interesting to watch him grow out of that over the years into an “elder statesman” of the game. What a great career he’s had, what a great contribution he’s made to the sport, and what a great champion.

Andre AgassiJay Winik’s reflections on Agassi’s career appear in today Wall Street Journal. I recommend his article to you: “We Watched Andre Agassi Grow: The punk kid who reinvigorated professional tennis.”

Goodbye, Andre. You will be missed.
