Verizon Gets iPhone

Well, here’s the news you’ve all been waiting for. Verizon will get an iPhone early next year. Here’s the story from The Wall Street Journal:

“Apple Inc. plans to begin mass producing a new iPhone by the end of 2010 that would allow Verizon Wireless to sell the smartphone early next year, said people briefed by Apple.

“The new iPhone would be similar in design to the iPhone 4 currently sold by AT&T Inc. but would be based on an alternative wireless technology called CDMA used by Verizon, these people said. The phone, for which Qualcomm Inc. is providing a key chip, is expected to be released in the first quarter of next year, according to the same people.”

AT&T will be hit big time by this, but I don’t care. I can’t wait to get back to Verizon.

Don’t believe it. The Wall Street Journal did not quote any primary sources and there is no official word from AT&T, Verizon, or Apple. This has been going on since the news came out that the iPhone would only be on AT&T. Every year it’s something new.

What is probably happening is Apple is manufacturing a CDMA version of the iPhone that will be able to be used by CDMA carriers in other countries, such as India. Just because Apple is making a CDMA iPhone doesn’t mean it’s coming to Verizon.

The last official word was that AT&T had the rights on the iPhone until 2012 when they renegotiated their contract with Apple for the iPad.

These rumors have been going on for 4 years. I mean if you think about it, it really doesn’t make sense. Why would Verizon be launching a hot phone right after Christmas when everyone has already renewed their contracts?

Unless Apple decides to allow Flash on the iPhone’s browser, I’m REALLY ready to dump the iPhone for a Droid. There are just too many things I can’t do with the iPhone because of that silly limitation.

The early 2011 rumor has already had some serious traction, and the WSJ article only adds to what everyone already knows.

My wife and I are with verizon and our 2 year upgrade comes in January. We’ll both be getting iPhones as soon as we can.
