The concern came up about the possibility of a single mother without resources being able to raise a trisomy 18 child . . .
yes, in certain countries where help is already in place for the mother and the child.
Even a young couple would have great difficulty providing for the needs of a severely ill child. So it IS ‘pro-life’ to work towards recognizing that we need to put reasonable structures in place to offer support for families with special needs children.
My own son is in private care . . . in the facility where his group home is located, the average cost per resident for care amounts to between six and eight thousand dollars a month. That is the average. Some residents require additional care. So for those people who say to others ‘you are on your own’, and who still say that they are pro-life, please know that it is not so simple as that.
Ultimately, what is the role of a society and its government in the lives of those who are vulnerable ? Can ‘abortion’ be stopped, and yet nothing done to support the children who will come with special needs, whose care will mount up to thousands of dollars a month?
Please don’t say, ‘that’s their problem’ . . . that is not the moral answer of any humane country . . . or the answer of any one who proclaims Christ Risen from the dead.
