The Besetting Sin of Worry

Pastor John Piper has a good word for those who battle the besetting sin of worry. His remarks are in answer to the following questions: “Is there a place for worriers in the church? Or is it a problem that some people perpetually worry?” You can listen to him here, or you can read a transcript of his remarks here.

I’m pleasantly surprised to read that Piper would consider gays and pedophiles and such to “have a place in his church” since all sinners have a place. I’m sure that kind of thinking angers a few of his listeners. But alas, it’s the sick who need the Doctor, right?

Great teaching on worry. Here’s something you might enjoy:

Oswald Chambers in My Utmost for His Highest says this about worry: “Resting in the Lord does not depend on external circumstances at all, but on your relationship to God Himself…We imagine that a little anxiety and worry are an indication of how really wise we are; it is much more an indication of how really wicked we are. Fretting springs from a determination to get our own way. Our Lord never worried and He was never anxious, because He was not ‘out’ to realize His own ideas; He was ‘out’ to realize God’s ideas. Fretting is wicked if you are a child of God…All our fret and worry is caused by calculating without God.”

His sermon on worry, worries me. I did not struggle with being anxious until Piper’s preaching.

    Come on……that is funny………
I am just having a good time, because I am notorious for knocking Piper so I thought I would live up to the standard.

    Have a worry-free day!

I seriously wonder how hard it was to find a picture of Piper with a smile on his face. I live in Minneapolis, see pictures of his face all the time, and have never actually seen one.

    My hat’s off to you.
