John Piper on Women in Combat

Check out John Piper’s article from World Magazine on women in combat. Here’s a snippet: “If I were the last man on the planet to think so, I would want the honor of saying no woman should go before me into combat to defend my country. A man who endorses women in combat is not pro-woman; he’s a wimp. He should be ashamed. For most of history, in most cultures, he would have been utterly scorned as a coward to promote such an idea. Part of the meaning of manhood as God created us is the sense of responsibility for the safety and welfare of our women.” Read the rest…

Pastor Charged with Criminal Discrimination against Female Pastor

Christianity Today has a story about a Finnish pastor who is being charged with criminal discrimination against a female pastor: ‘A Finnish district court prosecutor recently charged a member of the Finland state church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland (ELCF), with criminal discrimination for refusing to work with a female pastor. Two other church leaders have also been charged for not interfering to prevent the alleged violation.

    The Halloween Debate

I just finished watching the Democrat Debate for President on MSNBC, and I think it will go down in history as the “Halloween Debate.” Why? Because some of the things that were said were downright scary. Not only did Dennis Kucinich confess that he believes in UFO’s, but he also claimed that he has seen one! We have a candidate for President who believes in UFO’s! Now that’s spooky, but that’s not even the scary part. He also said that America should unilaterally disarm its nuclear arsenal because it would encourage Iran to stop seeking nuclear weapons. Why is this guy getting any time during what is supposed to be…

Alvin Plantinga Lectures at Southern Seminary

One of the things I greatly enjoyed about Southern Seminary was its lectureships. There are several endowed lectureships at Southern, and I had the opportunity to hear and meet some great scholars during my time there. Last week, Dr. Alvin Plantinga delivered the Norton Lectures at Southern Seminary, and they are now available online for free download. Dr. Plantinga teaches at the University of Notre Dame and is perhaps the leading evangelical philosopher alive today. You will want to listen to all of these.

    Touchstone Forum on Evangelicalism

The latest issue of Touchstone magazine has a forum in which a diverse group of Evangelicals answer questions related to the state of Evangelicalism today. I am a contributor to this discussion along with Russell Moore, Michael Horton, Darryl Hart, John Franke, and David Lyle Jeffrey. The article is posted online, and you can read it here. Here are the questions that each of us answered: ● “How do you define ‘Evangelical,’ in a way that distinguishes Evangelicals from other believing Christians? And has this definition changed over the last several decades?”

NY Times: Wrong about Evangelicals, Right about Giuliani

David Kirkpatrick of the New York Times writes an interesting piece about the “The Evangelical Crackup.” The article focuses on the shifting political allegiances of evangelical Christians in America. His contention is that the Christian conservative voting bloc is about to fall apart and go the way of the dinosaur. Although I think Kirkpatrick’s understanding of the evangelical movement is seriously deficient, he has one think right. If Rudy Giuliani becomes the Republican nominee for president, there will be a tectonic shift in the Republican party. He writes:

Justin Taylor (et. al.) Endorse Mike Huckabee

If you are not a regular reader of Justin Taylor’s blog, you should be. It’s the Drudge Report of the Reformed Evangelical blogosphere. Yesterday, he and Joe Carter and Matthew Anderson made the case for Mike Huckabee’s candidacy for President. They argue that Huckabee will turnout the social, fiscal, and national security conservative vote to prevail against Hillary Clinton. They write:

    Boston College Wins. Dang!

I’m rooting for LSU to win the national championship (surprise, surprise). LSU is ranked number 3 in the BCS, so tonight I was pulling for Virginia Tech to beat number 2 Boston College. It didn’t happen, and I have two reactions to this game. Reaction One: Boston College deserved to win this game. BC scored two touchdowns when it counted, and Virginia Tech’s only touchdown was not really a touchdown. They were given a touchdown because of an error in officiating. BC won. Good for them. Reaction Two: LSU would crush both of these teams. The Tigers have already put the hurt on Virginia Tech, and they would do the…
