TNIV Is Dead . . . Sort of

On Tuesday Zondervan, Biblica and the Committee on Bible Translation issued a joint statement announcing a new revision of the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible to be released in 2011. They also announced that when the new edition is released, the TNIV will be taken off of the market. For those of you who are just joining this conversation and are wondering why this is important, let me bring you up to speed.

    Boyce College Dorm Meeting Worship

We just had an outstanding dorm meeting at Boyce College tonight. Dr. Russell Moore preached a message from James 1 (which will appear on the Boyce College blog tomorrow). Buck Buchanan is leading our worship band, and they are doing a bang-up job—really incredible. I hope they’ll record some of their music this year so that I can share it with you here. Until they do, please enjoy the album that the band produced last school year. You can download the entire album as a zip file here, or listen below.

    Choosing Thomas

Twenty weeks into their pregnancy, T. K. and Deidrea Laux found out that their son had Trisomy 13—a rare DNA abnormality. After being counseled that “terminating the pregnancy” would be an option, they chose life. In Deidrea’s own words: “We didn’t not terminate because we were hanging on to some sort of hope that there was a medical mistake or there was gonna be some sort of medical miracle. We didn’t terminate because he’s our son.” The Dallas Morning News has produced this video chronicling the birth and home-going of Thomas. The Laux’s are members of Paul Lindquist’s church (one of my former Criswell College students), and Paul is the…

    Tim Hawkins Goes Political

Tim Hawkins has previously appeared on this blog in his hilarious videos “Cletus Take the Reel” and “Chick-fil-a.” Hawkins’ latest video, however, is certain to cause some controversy because it is decidedly political. Watch it above for yourself. If you have time, you should also watch the golden oldies below.

McLaren: A Wolf in Wolf’s Clothing

As Brian McLaren has drifted further and further off the reservation, I have taken to using scare-quotes whenever referring to him as an “evangelical.” Truth be known, however, he’s no longer even a scare-quotes “evangelical.” If you think I’m overreacting, wait until you hear this. On August 13, McLaren announced on his blog that he would be observing the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. This is not a joke. He writes,

Does N. T. Wright Hold to Penal Substitution?

Lee Irons has an interesting post on N. T. Wright’s view of the atonement. You need to read the whole thing, but here’s the conclusion: “It looks more like a case of using orthodox labels to refer to a position that is not orthodox. At the end of the day, for Bishop Wright, sin is an impersonal evil force, not personal rebellion against God; sin has bad consequences, but does not elicit God’s punitive wrath against the sinner; and the cross is to be understood as some version of the Christus Victor theory in which Christ defeats evil by letting it do its worst to him, not as a penal…

RBL Reviews Hebrews, Christ, and the Law

Boyce College professor Dr. Barry Joslin published a book late last year titled Hebrews, Christ and the Law: The Theology of the Mosaic Law in Hebrews 7:1–10:18. The book just received a favorable review in The Review of Biblical Literature. The reviewer is David M. Allen of the Queen’s Foundation in Birmingham, England. Great work, Dr. Joslin!

    Ted Kennedy (1932-2009)

Senator Ted Kennedy died early this morning from brain cancer. He will be remembered as one of the most powerful senators ever to have served, as well as one of the Senate’s most effective orators. He was the third-longest-serving senator in American history. He will also be remembered for his infamous role in a 1969 scandal that came to be known as “Chappaquiddick,” an auto accident that left a young woman dead. Many think that this incident ruined any hope that he might one day be elected president.

    A Second Tornado in Minneapolis

You have probably heard the news of what happened this week with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). At the denomination’s national meeting in Minneapolis, delegates voted to allow gay men and lesbians in committed relationships to serve as members of the clergy. Just before delegates were to debate the measure, a tornado touched-down and damaged the church in which they were meeting (as well as some other buildings nearby).

Kardashian’s Unplanned Pregnancy and Abortion Dilemma

Kourtney Kardashian is probably best-known for her role on an E! network reality show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” I have never seen the show, and I know next to nothing about Kardashian personally. But today an article about her on the People magazine website caught this pro-lifer’s attention. In short, the article describes Kardashian’s inner turmoil about her recent unplanned pregnancy and deliberations about abortion. Here’s what she decided in her own words:
