LSU Rolls-over the Tide

Ridley

If you missed LSU’s victory over Alabama today, you missed a good one. I’m still astonished that LSU figures out how to win these tough, tough games. After the loss to Auburn a couple of weeks ago, I wasn’t very optimistic about this game. But somehow, they did it. Jordan Jefferson actually completed some passes today, and LSU’s offense came up with a couple of bursts when they needed it in the second half. What I saw today proved that if LSU had a consistent quarterback, they would probably be number one in the nation. But then again, if a frog had wings, he wouldn’t bump his bottom when he bounced.

This win makes LSU 8-1 with only two conference games remaining (Ole Miss and Arkansas). This makes for some interesting possibilities in the postseason. Alabama’s loss today effectively puts them out of the SEC title picture. If Auburn wins out or finishes with only one loss, they will go the SEC championship game. If LSU wins out and Auburn loses twice, LSU would play for the SEC title. I think, however, that it is very unlikely that Auburn would lose more than one game. So Auburn is still the favorite to win the SEC west. If the Cam Newton allegations prove to be true, however, all bets are off. The NCAA could nullify all of Auburn’s wins this season, and LSU could very easily enter the title game. We’ll have to wait and see on that one.

What about the BCS picture? It’s possible that Auburn would enter the SEC title game with one loss and then lose the title game. This would make them a two-loss SEC school with LSU being only a one-loss SEC school. How will the BCS rankings handle that scenario? I don’t know. But if it happens, a one-loss LSU team would deserve to be in the title game before any of the other yahoo’s in front of them in the BCS rankings.

I disagree on your last point. Teams that have not won title games have played in BCS bowls, and recall LSU’s first title? They played and beat OU, who did not even win the BIg-12. If TCU and Boise win out, there are your at-large bids.

    Jeff,

Yes, but OU had only one loss going into the BCS title game. If Auburn has two losses, they won’t make it. If LSU only has one loss, why shouldn’t they get a chance?

    Mike,

You are dreaming, dude. TCU is not in the same league, and neither is Boise State.

Two comments – first, LSU would absolutely crush TCU. Almost every SEC team would… Denny is right, TCU isnt even in the same league. This is why, after the terrible decision to not let Auburn play for the championship with 1 loss, bcs will send any 1 loss SEC team before sending an undefeafed team from just about any other conference.

Second, none of that matters because Auburn will win the SEC championship, possibly go undefeafed. War Eagle baby!!!

I think there have been a couple of examples of one loss Big XII teams not winning their division but nevertheless backing into the BCS championship game.

If memory serves, the first time it happened it was Svoboda’s Cornhuskers, which had been blown out by Colorado. LSU beat a heavily favored Tennessee team in the SEC Championship, which prevented Tenn. from going to the national championship game. Then Nebraska got blown out in the championship game.

    Denny,

If you cant even win your conference you dont deserve a chance to win the National Championship. Im a Husker fan and I admit that. Remember we went to the 01 NC even though we didnt go to the Big 12 championship. We didnt deserve to be there and LSU doesnt deserve it if they cant even win their conference.

But you are right- Boise State and TCU arent in the same league. People are all of a sudden impressed that TCU just beat up another non-BCS school?

  • Matt Svoboda

    Chris,

I just read your comment. As I just said, NU didnt deserve to be in the NC. Oregon deserved to be in the NC that year against Miami. They were the number 3 team and playing great.

  • Matt Svoboda

    Barton,

You exaggerated your point- a lot. A 1 loss SEC team would never pass an undefeated Big Ten, Big 12, or Pac 10 champ. Ever.

Also, Auburn will lose one or two games when all is said and done. Teams with mediocre defenses eventually fall.

I’m a total SEC homer, a lifelong Razorback fan, but right now TCU is such a complete team with such great coaching that I don’t mind saying TCU would punch LSU in the mouth. I’m embarrassed for LSU’s offense when I watch them. What a joke!

LSU is 8-1 according to the letter of the law. They are 7-2 according to the spirit of the law. It was a nice win against Alabama, but they don’t deserve an opportunity for any title game.

  • Matt Svoboda

The fact that LSU is ranked 5th is hilarious. The real question is if they even deserve a top 10 ranking…

Ohio State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Stanford, and Oklahoma State are all better 1 loss teams…. So i guess they should be at 10. This is all for not since Arkansas will beat them by two TDs in a couple weeks.

  • Nate

Matt, didn’t you mean Arkansas will be up by two TDs only to lose to LSU in a couple of weeks? Sorry, I couldn’t help! That is what happened to them against Bama, and I do believe LSU just beat Bama.

  • D.J. Williams

To everybody saying that Boise and TCU aren’t in the same league – why is it then that every time they get the chance to play one of the “big boy” schools, they beat them? Not to mention the whipping Utah put on Alabama a few years ago.

  • Matt Svoboda

I loved nothing more than when I watched Utah beat Alabama in every aspect of the game.

That game and watching Oregon State beat USC a few years ago (when everyone discovered Rodgers and USC was ranked 1) were two of the most exciting games I have watched- well not counting every Husker game.
