Football is not for girls.

With the Superbowl approaching, there are many football stories circulating in the media. One story in particular caught my attention, and I have to say that it is rather disturbing. MSNBC.com reports:

On 80 teams across the nation, women are donning pads, hitting hard, breaking bones and launching the ball in a way that gives an entirely new meaning to throwing “like a girl.”

One of the female players explains how she got hooked on the game:

“I had lost a good friend, and I was very angry. After the funeral, I went to a practice, and I started hitting because I was so angry. I had wanted to be a receiver, but I realized I liked hitting, so they put me on the other side of the line.”

Who knew that football could be so therapeutic emotionally?

I suppose females’ playing football is not as bad as sending women into combat. Nevertheless, I suspect that this new league is not going to going to sell in Peoria.

I agree that the anger-management technique espoused in this article is rather troubling (surely many males who are professional footballers would claim the same benefit to their careers, and they’d be equally deceived), but what’s so inherently wrong with women playing football? I can’t see why football should belong to men because of innate gender distinctions. . . .

I can name several men who would agree with you that football is not for girls…every guy I ever knocked flat on his backside in a backyard game. Why are men so threatened by women?

I always wanted to play volleyball in high school, but it was only available for women back then – may be still now I don’t know.

I guess tell someone that there mother wears combat boots isn’t a cut down anymore.
