LSU was expected to win this game, and they did in decisive fashion. But not everything here is positive.

Son of Fallen Fan Throws Out the First Pitch of the Playoffs
On July 7, Shannon Stone took his six-year old son Cooper to watch the Texas Rangers play the Oakland A’s at the Ballpark in Arlington. During the second inning, Mr. Stone fell from the stands while trying to catch a foul ball that Rangers’ star Josh Hamilton had thrown to him. One hour later, Stone was pronounced dead at a local hospital. He was 39.

Ken Starr’s First Year as Baylor President
Here’s a really interesting article from The Texas Tribune about Ken Starr’s first year as president of Baylor University. In a nutshell, most view his first year as an unexpected success. Starr has won over his critics and has spent an inordinate amount of time negotiating with other presidents how to keep the Big 12 together. Oh, he’s also joined a Baptist church. Read the rest here.

LSU Should Be Ranked Number One in Both Polls
LSU defeated West Virginia tonight in decisive fashion. That makes LSU 4-0. Without question, they should be ranked number one in both the AP and Coach’s polls. No other team in the country can match résumés with LSU at this point. Three out of four of LSU’s games have been against ranked teams (one of those being the #3 team in the country, the Oregon Ducks). All three of those victories have been away games for the Tigers. The Tigers have dominated all of their opponents to this point. Anybody who still thinks Oklahoma deserves the number one spot needs to get a grip on reality.

Tony Romo played through broken rib, punctured lung
Tony Romo has never been my favorite Cowboys’ quarterback. That distinction belongs and evermore shall belong to Roger Staubach. That being said, I’m going to give him props for this: Tony Romo’s late-game heroics in San Francisco Sunday came while he was playing in serious pain. Romo reportedly suffered both a fractured rib and a punctured lung against the 49ers.

Baylor Is Holding Texas A&M Back from SEC
The presidents of the Southeastern Conference schools voted unanimously last night to invite Texas A&M to join the SEC. Their invitation was extended on the condition that no individual Big 12 schools would sue A&M for leaving the conference. All of the Big 12 schools had given their assurance of no legal action. But Baylor University withdrew their consent yesterday and said that they are considering legal action. Where do things stand now? A&M won’t go to the SEC as long as Baylor holds out. Surely there are financial reasons for all of this. Baylor is in a conference with outstanding football programs, not the least of which are Texas,…

LSU Gets the “W” with Smashmouth Football
What a great season-opener for the LSU Tigers. In a high-stakes match-up, they defeated the number 3 Oregon Ducks with good old fashioned smashmouth football. And they did it without their starting quarterback and star wide receiver. LSU had very few penalties and only one turnover. They played with great field position most of the evening because of a punter who has a cannon for a leg.

LSU Down and Out a Week before Season Opener
I’ll start my annual Saturday blogging on college football in earnest next week. But I thought it might be worth making at least one early post today in light of the situation in Baton Rouge.
