I wrote two posts about this debate last week (see here and here), but until now the video hasn’t been available. You can see all of it above. If you don’t have time for all two hours, you can watch about four and a half minutes of highlights below. A big thanks and hat tip to CanonWired.com for making these available.

Does gay marriage lead to polygamy?
Doug Wilson gives his post-mortem on his debate with Andrew Sullivan over gay marriage. The audio and video have not been released yet, but apparently there was quite a row over Wilson’s contention that the legalization of gay marriage will lead to the legalization of polygamous marriage. The arguments for the one are identical to those in favor of the other. Thus if you accept those arguments with respect to gay marriage, it will be impossible to deny them for polygamous marriage. Wilson elaborates on why Sullivan so vigorously opposed the point: The reason that Andrew was so adamant about rejecting the logical consequence of polygamy is that it would…

They really do hate people like me
Rod Dreher weighs-in on the recent article by The Washington Post’s outgoing Ombudsman. Like most other traditional marriage supporters, he was scandalized by the piece (I mentioned it here). But Dreher’s article caught my eye because he is an insider and is deeply critical of his own profession. When it comes to reporting on the culture war, my profession is deeply corrupt, and profoundly self-righteous. The contempt with which so many within newsrooms hold social conservatives and traditional Christians is real. Stories like this one temper my sorrow over the demise of my profession. They really do hate people like me, and consider us not worthy of the basic fairness…

Asinine, ignorant, unfair journalism at Washington Post
This has to be one of the most asinine, ignorant, and unfair articles that I have ever read—and yet it comes from the ombudsman at The Washington Post. The guy basically admits that when traditional marriage supporters speak, he closes his eyes and puts his fingers in his ears and says “na na na na na…” After all, everyone knows such people are bigots. Why should bigots have a hearing? He writes:

Why are conservatives losing the marriage battle?
Rod Dreher has an insightful little piece about why conservatives are losing the marriage battle. Dreher writes: Marriage culture is like a river that has changed course, and left we who adhere to the traditional model an oxbow. We are trying to convince others to help us re-channel the river, but that seems not only unlikely, but nonsensical to people who just want to sail on. Older Americans may remember a time when a different view of marriage prevailed. Younger Americans have never known such a time. All they have ever experienced is a view of marriage that has no necessary connection to procreation or to permanence. Their parents’ acquiesced…

Is civil marriage for gay couples good for society?
There is a debate coming next week that you won’t want to miss. Doug Wilson will face Andrew Sullivan to answer the question, “Is civil marriage for gay couples good for society?” Sullivan will argue that it is, and Wilson will argue that it is not. Peter Hitchens will moderate. The debate will take place in the University of Idaho SUB Ballroom at 7:30pm on Wednesday, February 27th.

Video of Wendell Berry speaking on gay marriage
Wendell Berry’s remarks on gay marriage at Georgetown College were previously only available in reported excerpts. The college has now posted the full video of his comments on YouTube. You can watch it above. You can listen to the full argument in the video above, but here’s the heart of what Berry said:

Senator Rubio’s moment in the sun
I like Senator Marco Rubio. And I actually thought he did a fantastic job delivering the Republican response to the President’s state of the union address. Nevertheless, the substance of his speech has been eclipsed by a very human moment while delivering his remarks. It was clear about halfway through the speech that Senator Rubio’s mouth was dry. So he finally gave in and reached for a bottle of water.

Bishops reject “compromise” on abortion mandate
Cardinal Timothy Dolan has released a statement today on behalf of the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Bishops have rejected the so-called “compromise” that the Obama administration proffered last week. The Bishops rightly conclude that the mandate still requires Catholic hospitals and schools to provide contraception and abortifacient drugs to their employees. Cardinal Dolan writes, The Administration’s proposal maintains its inaccurate distinction among religious ministries. It appears to offer second-class status to our first-class institutions in Catholic health care, Catholic education, and Catholic charities. HHS offers what it calls an “accommodation,” rather than accepting the fact that these ministries are integral to our Church and worthy of the…

Marco Rubio, the Republican Savior?
The cover of the most recent Time magazine has a full-size picture of Marco Rubio and dubs him “The Republican Savior.” Senator Rubio tweeted a response today, and it is classic. He writes: There is only one savior, and it is not me. #Jesus There was once another politician who responded very differently to such acclaim, and the outcome wasn’t so good for him (Daniel 4:29-37). So this is a very good response from Senator Rubio. It’s exactly what he should have said.
