    Young Conservatives for Traditional Marriage

From where I’m sitting, it seems like conservatives everywhere are folding like a cheap nickel-knife on the issue of marriage. Defections of the likes of Rob Portman and John Huntsman have convinced many that legal gay marriage is an inevitability and that traditional marriage is a thing of the past—a quaint notion that is dying out with the older generations that have until now held so steadfastly to it.

Which cable news network is the most partisan?

The Pew Research Center’s 2013 State of the News Media report has some interesting data in it. I would have assumed FOX News to be the network airing the largest percentage of commentary, but that is not at all the case. Of the three cable networks, MSNBC far outstrips the other networks in the percentage of its airtime that’s devoted to commentary. Here’s how commentary vs. reporting breaks down for each network: Network Commentary Reporting MSNBC 85% 15% FOX 55% 45% CNN 46% 54% CNN is the only one of the three that devotes the majority of its airtime to reporting the news. It’s also the network that lags far behind the…

God determines who is on the right side of history

Eric Metaxas addressed CPAC last week, and I believe he was like a voice of one crying in the wilderness. His speech was about religious liberty and its recent erosion under the HHS mandate and the push for legal gay marriage. He noted that many politicos within the GOP are rushing to “get on the right side of history” on the issue of gay marriage in particular. Then Metaxas then delivered what I think is a prophetic word that everyone needs to hear: God determines who is on the right side of history. Not the mainstream media and certainly not the government. I recommend that you watch and listen to…

Hillary Clinton comes out in favor of gay marriage

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton released a video today announcing her support for gay marriage. You can watch it above. She says that gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights. Why the flurry of announcements from politicos concerning gay marriage? It has everything to do with the Supreme Court’s deliberations about gay marriage. The Court will hear oral arguments this month and will render a decision this June. Gay activist groups are doing a full-court press to get as many supporters on record as possible. The hope seems to be that the court will be swayed by these ringing endorsements. We will know whether their…

Confronting Senator Portman’s use of scripture to affirm gay marriage

Last week Senator Rob Portman announced a dramatic reversal in his views on gay marriage. He cited a number of reasons, but the main catalyst was his son’s coming out of the closet two years ago. As a result of that revelation, Portman says he began to reconsider his own opposition to same-sex marriage. In an op-ed for The Columbus Dispatch, Portman explains: Two years ago, my son Will, then a college freshman, told my wife, Jane, and me that he is gay. He said he’d known for some time, and that his sexual orientation wasn’t something he chose; it was simply a part of who he is. Jane and…

Rubio beats a retreat at CPAC on traditional marriage

I like Marco Rubio. I really do. But did you see his remarks at CPAC today? If not, you can watch above. There was a brief moment that may have gone unnoticed by many viewers and by those in attendance. It was a subtle turn of phrase that I believe indicates a pretty momentous shift on the issue of marriage. Here’s the sentence: Just because I believe that states should have the right to define marriage in the traditional way does not make me a bigot. [at 4:40 above] Did you see it? At first blush it sounds like a pro-traditional marriage statement. And at one level it is. I’m…

A gay man comes out against same-sex marriage

I just read one of the most remarkable stories I’ve ever seen. It’s an article by Doug Mainwaring, and its title captures the gist of his surprising testimony, “I’m Gay and I Oppose Same-Sex Marriage.” In a nutshell, this man has been gay for as long as he can remember. Nevertheless, he married a woman as an adult and adopted two children with her. After their marriage ended, he spent ten years finally exploring homosexual relationships while raising his children. He writes:

A Succinct Case for Traditional Marriage

As arguments for traditional marriage fall on deaf ears in our culture, I believe that love requires us to make the case nevertheless (1 Cor. 13:6). To that end, we need to marshal all the arguments at our disposal—both biblical and natural law arguments. The natural law case has been made most effectively in the recent book What Is Marriage? This book makes the case without appealing to religious authority but with an exclusive appeal to a “publicly accessible” rationale for traditional marriage. One of the co-authors of that book, Ryan Anderson, has also just recently published an article that distills the case for traditional marriage into twelve pages. It’s…

Sen. Paul’s filibuster about executing American citizens

As I write this, Senator Rand Paul is in his fifth hour of a filibuster. This is not one of those pseudo-filibusters that don’t involve actually holding forth. This is a real-deal filibuster, like “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.” Senator Paul is doing a Jimmy Stewart right now. You can watch the opening statement of his filibuster above. In short, here’s why he’s doing what he’s doing:

No one was safe in SBTS’s chapel today

Kevin Smith brought the heat today in SBTS’s chapel. It was a political sermon in all the right ways. No one was safe. In my view, he simply said what needed to be said. He contended that there’s a big difference between American Christianity and Christians in America. Taking his lead from 1 Pet. 2:9-12, he said that Christians have forgotten what it means to be a “peculiar” people—strangers and aliens on our way to another place. He dinged Republicans, Democrats, whites, blacks and everyone in between…in a good way. In a prophetic way. Listen to this sermon. You can watch the video above, download the audio here, or listen…
