    What’s Happening in Louisville?

In my last post, I mentioned that I have been without power due to Hurrican Ike. Yes, believe it or not, we got hurricane force winds way up here in Louisville, Kentucky. As a result, the entire campus of Southern Seminary is without power. Moreover, about 300,000 homes and businesses in Louisville are still withouth electricity and will be for some time. Governor Steve Beshear declared a state of emergency on Sunday in a press release. The governor has said that “This is the biggest outage on record in the Commonwealth of Kentucky,” and officials estimate that it will take 10-14 days to restore power to parts of the city…

    Nastia Liukin Returns to Dallas

This one is for all the die-hard Olympic fans. My wife took our two daughters to see Nastia Liukin’s return to Dallas from Beijing on Thursday. There was a big crowd at the DFW airport, but my wife was nevertheless able to snap a pretty decent shot (see below). The Dallas Morning News has a story on Liukin’s reception. There is also a video of her remarks.

    One Hope for One Dollar

Pastor Joe Blankenship had a formative gospel influence on me during my college and early seminary years, and I am privileged to let you know about a great work that he is leading in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The ministry is called One Hope, and it’s mission is simple: “The goal of One Hope is to use the hope-giving and life-changing message of Jesus Christ to combat the cycles of racism, prejudice, abuse, violence, and poverty that exist in the inner city of Tulsa, and to train college-aged men and women to replicate the One Hope model in other urban areas” (see press release). One Hope engages inner-city and under-privileged kids through…

    A New Ministry

Please forgive the personal note. But I thought I might mention a transition that I will be going through in the very near future. On August 1, I will begin as the new dean of Boyce College in Louisville, Kentucky. Boyce College is the undergraduate arm of my alma mater, Southern Seminary.

    Missing post?

Some of you may have noticed that one of my posts has been deleted. The post in question was a video from another website, and a reader just pointed out to me some distasteful comments scrolling at the bottom of the video that I had not noticed when I posted it here. I watched the video more than once before posting it, and so did my wife. But neither of us caught the offensive remarks. In any case, that’s why the post is gone. I apologize and ask your pardon for not being more careful. Thanks, Mark Tucker, for helping a brother out! Proverbs 27:17 “As iron sharpens iron, so…

Note: A New Ministry and a New Article

Congratulations to my good friend Jim Hamilton who has just been appointed Associate Professor of Biblical Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Jim is the most prolific young scholar that I know, and his work in both testaments in the area of biblical theology has been a great contribution to the church. Southern could not have gotten a better guy. You can read the announcement here. On a side note, Jim and I wrote a little article together for JBMW last fall, and it has recently been made available for free download from the CBMW website. The article was a brief survey of younger evangelicals and…

    Mohler’s tumor is not cancerous

You may have read the report last week about the tumor that Dr. Albert Mohler had removed from his colon. Many friends and supports have been praying since then that the pathology report would show the tumor was not malignant. Today the Baptist Press reports that tests show that the tumor is not malignant. Mohler announced the good news in Southern Seminary’s chapel service, and he said the following:

Richard Bauckham Lecture at Criswell College

I teach at Criswell College in Dallas, Texas, and last week we hosted Dr. Richard Bauckham for a lecture on the biblical book of Revelation. Dr. Bauckham’s lecture was titled “How To Read the Book of Revelation.” The main point of his address was to explain how the genre of Revelation should effect the proper interpretation of the same. What was fascinating to me was the Q&A time at the end. Criswell College has a premillenial confessional statement, which suggests a certain reading of Revelation 20 that does not cohere with Dr. Bauckham’s. At the very beginning of the Q&A you’ll hear me ask Dr. Bauckham whether reading Revelation “symbolically”…

Southern Seminary Prays for Dr. Mohler

After Southern Seminary’s chapel service yesterday, Dr. R. Albert Mohler informed the student body about the tumor in his colon and his upcoming surgery. After the announcement, Dr. Russell Moore called for a special time of prayer for Dr. Mohler, and the student body gathered around to lay hands on him. Dr. Tom Schreiner voiced the prayer in behalf of the Seminary family. Listening to Dr. Moore’s remarks and Dr. Schreiner’s prayer reminds me of what a great, sovereign, gracious Christ we serve. Both of these clips were encouraging to me, and I hope they will be to you too.
