    The Cello Song

Steven Sharp Nelson released a single in May that is a variation on an old Bach classic. It’s kind of an experiment. It is a song written for one cello, but he does it with eight. Watch it above, and download the single here. (HT: Trevin Wax)

    Owl City’s Newest Drops Today

Owl City’s sophomore release drops today. It’s the follow-up to the 2009 album containing the mega-hit single “Fireflies.” My two girls loved “Fireflies”especially the video. They don’t know that the lead singer’s name is Adam Young. They always refer to him as “the man with all his toys.” Christianity Today has an interview with Adam Young today. In the interview, Young talks about how he writes songs. He explains, “My prayer has always been, ‘Lord, just give me the songs you want me to write so I can record them, release them, put them in the can, and reflect all glory and praise back to you.” Read the rest here.…

    Jane Russell (1921-2011)

You have probably heard the news by now that Jane Russell—a legend of the silver screen—has passed away. What you may not have known (at least I didn’t) is that she was a professing Christian. Christianity Today has a fascinating interview with Ms. Russell from 2009 in which she discusses being a Christian in Hollywood, her gospel singing career, and her pro-life advocacy. She even shares a personal story about her own near death experience after having an abortion as a young woman. Here’s an excerpt:

    Grammy Malaise

I have a confession to make. I watched the Grammys last night. I don’t know how many years it’s been since I’ve seen the Grammys, but I decided this year to break my long streak of paying no attention to them at all. As I watched last night, I remembered why it was that I haven’t given heed to these awards. As a cultural moment, the Grammys are supremely and exquisitely vacuous. In fact, I would say that they are quite depressing. As far as the decline of civilizations is concerned, the Grammys are right up there with gladiatorial games and barbarian invasions.

    Forgiveness

This is a great clip from an old episode of “ER.” It shows the impotency of postmodern/liberal gobbledygook theology. Best line: “I want a real chaplain who believes in a real God and a real hell!… I need answers! And all your questions and uncertainty are making things worse!” (HT: Trevin Wax)

    An MTV Abortion

Last week I saw a news story about the MTV program “16 and Pregnant,” which was set to air an episode featuring a young mother who chose to have an abortion. The mother’s name is Markai Durham, and she already had one child when she became pregnant a second time. She and the father decided that they didn’t have the resources to raise a second child, and that is why they chose to end the life growing inside her. The story of her first pregnancy and birth was the subject of an episode last November (full episode here). The story of her decision to abort her second child aired last…
