Turning the Bible into Toilet Paper

I mentioned yesterday that I am in New Orleans this week to deliver a paper on homosexuality at the Evangelical Theological Society. Yesterday I came across an article that relates to the subject matter of that paper. In an interview with Details magazine, gay actor Ian McKellen says that he tears pages out of Bibles that he finds in hotel rooms. Some of the Bible pages are hung up in his bathroom as toilet paper. Here’s the exchange:

Look What the Cat Dragged In

There are certain moments in life that you never forget–those indelible moments that fix themselves in memory, sometimes for happy reasons, and sometimes for not so happy reasons. I had such a moment in the latter category when I was in the 8th grade. A friend of mine handed me a newly-released rock-and-roll album from a band that was just making its mark on popular music. I remember right where I was standing in the schoolyard of my junior high school when he gave it to me. The album cover showed four big-haired overly made-up vixens on the front of the album, and I remember thinking: “Wow, these girls are…

    Does God Love Homosexuals?

I got an e-mail today from someone who wanted to know if I believe that God loves homosexuals. The short answer is yes. But short answers aren’t nearly as good as biblical answers. So let’s look at three texts to establish the point. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

    Fleeing the Abortionist’s Probe

I wrote last week about Abby Johnson who quit her job as executive director of a Planned Parenthood clinic after seeing an ultrasound image of an abortion. Mike Huckabee recently interviewed Johnson, and she provided much more detail than previously about the abortion that she saw. The mother who aborted her child was 13 weeks pregnant. Johnson says that she saw the baby trying to get away from the abortionist’s probe. Watch the interview above. (HT: Justin Taylor)

    Pro-life Conversion at Planned Parenthood

Watching an ultrasound of an abortion changed Abby Johnson forever. She is now prolife and has quit her job as director of the Planned Parenthood clinic in Bryan, Texas. Johnson describes her conversion this way: “I just thought I can’t do this anymore, and it was just like a flash that hit me and I thought that’s it.” She also says that there was pressure on her to increase revenues for Planned Parenthood by increasing the number of abortions. She explains in The Houston Chronicle: “Definitely the most lucrative part of their business was abortions. One of the things that kept coming up was how family planning services were really…

    The Myth of Monogamy

An article on CNN.com suggests that monogamy is on the decline and that serial monogamy and polyamory may be better alternatives. Serial monogamy is “a model in which people move from one committed long-term relationship to another and choose partners for different reasons at different stages of their life.” Polyamory is “the practice of having romantic relationships with multiple people at the same time with the full knowledge and consent of all involved.” This article is really sad for a lot of reasons, but I do think it accurately describes the decline of sexual mores in American society. What’s interesting, however, is that the author does not present any of…

The State of the American Woman

I was grateful to be a guest on The Albert Mohler Program yesterday to discuss the recent TIME magazine cover story, “The State of the American Woman.” [audio:http://www.sbts.edu/media/audio/totl/2009/AMP_10_22_2009.mp3] Here’s a description of the show: “Time Magazine has recently reported on the state of the American women. Though many modern women are more powerful and make more money than any generation previously, they are far less happy. As the family unit dissolves and the gift of motherhood is set aside for cultural achievement, women are losing a sense of sure footing and purpose in life. As Dr. Mohler notes today, women will find genuine happiness through the gospel, faithfulness to His…

SF Chronicle Compares Interracial Marriage to Gay “Marriage”

In my last post, I warned that people would compare the Louisiana case to gay “marriage.” It’s already happening. In the online edition of today’s San Francisco Chronicle, Yobie Benjamin writes: “If you think gay couples are the only ones being denied the right to marry, think again. Racism and anti-miscegenation (the banning of interracial marriage) is alive and well in Louisiana… The case is clearly no different from the discrimination gay couples suffer when government refuses to grant them right to marry.”

    Interracial Couple Denied Marriage License

The Associated Press reports that a Justice of the Peace in Hammond, Louisiana has denied a marriage license to an interracial couple. The Judge says that he is not a racist, but that he has good reason for withholding the license: “I do ceremonies for black couples right here in my house… My main concern is for the children… I don’t do interracial marriages because I don’t want to put children in a situation they didn’t bring on themselves… In my heart, I feel the children will later suffer… I try to treat everyone equally.”
