How To Convert a Full-Blooded Racist

John Piper says that he grew up as a “full-blooded racist.” Last year he published a book that chronicles his rearing in the Jim Crow South, and he tells how the gospel is the only antidote to the sin of racism. It is a gripping account of the ugliness of racism and of the overwhelming triumph of grace.

The book is titled Bloodlines: Race, Cross, and the Christian, and today Desiring God Ministries has made the book available for you to download for free. This is a remarkable book, and you really ought to read it if you haven’t already.

Here’s the link for the free download: Bloodlines: Race, Cross, and the Christian.

Thanks for putting up this series of posts. Bloodlines sounds like an excellent read.

I suspect posts about MLK Jr will attract very few comments unlike posts involving social issues. People forget that MLK Jr was very much reviled outside of the black community in the 1960s. He was seen broadly as a troublemaker and agitator and was not just hated in the south. People celebrated his murder.

Today MLK is presented as a rather white-washed character who everyone holds in high esteem. Yet, many Christians tiptoe around MLK. I remember being at a lecture where Owen Strachan was discussing King. Owen said many good things about King, mostly involving his efforts towards civil rights, but also mentioned King’s liberalism as a negative characteristic.

Yet, King wasn’t promoting gay rights or abortion rights. His ministry was essentially pro-life and pro-family with his call to to ending poverty, expand access to the job market for poor minorities, and an end to war.
