Good News from Yesterday’s Election

The presidential election was over pretty early last night (compared to ’00 and ’04), but I stayed up until after 2am anyway to find out the results of Proposition 8 in California. When I finally went to bed, the vote count was too close to call, and it was still too close when I checked the news this morning.

The Los Angeles Times and other news outlets are now reporting that Proposition 8 has passed. So the state constitution of California will now include the following sentence:

“Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

The amendment passed with a slim majority, but this is big news when you consider the fact that California is one of the most liberal states in the union. That a measure like this one could pass in California is heartening.

what I am REALLY shocked by is the noticeable silence regarding the Colorado personhood amendment and the 2nd attempt for the South Dakota abortion ban.

Seriously, Denny, I want thoughts on these. Sure, it’s your blog and all, but if you’re going to talk about the implications of liberals, surely, you need to be talking about the implications of these two defeats and what this really means regarding how we deal with sex education and safe sex.

    Praise God!

Joel Rosenberg has a great post on his site, regarding how the Epicenter is responding to the news of Obama’s win.

You can find it at joelrosenberg.com, under the blog section.

My thoughts are that government should get out of the marriage license biz, just like they should stay out of church and other religions.

First of all, Paul, check out my synopsis of last night on my blog. 🙂

Second, it indicates that this country is farther gone than we realized, since South Dakota can’t even get behind an abortion ban that made sense to anyone except pro-abortion radicals.

60% of America is pro-abortion radicals?

I am surprised that you didn’t mention the Colorado personhood amendment. That, to me, is the fascinating one.

Of course, it was worded so vaguely that it could have been used to ban birth control pills, which would have set the pro-life movement back at least 50 years.

John’s here all week. Try the veal…

Anyway, another bit of good news that’ll never get mentioned on this blog unless I do it is this:

In Massachusetts, carrying up to an ounce of marijuana is no longer a jailable offense.

Whether you’re for or against drug legalization, this IS a step in the right direction, as no one deserves to have to forfeit their education or their careers simply because they wanted to smoke a joint.

I guess what we have to decide is whether America is a Christian nation or a nation that demands equality for all people and religions. If you think it is Christian nation, gay marriage should be banned. If you think it’s all about equality, it should be allowed. But you can’t criminalize polygamy in the same breath. I think what makes it so difficult is that America is both. It’s a Christian nation founded on Christian ideals, but it also is concerned with equal rights. As a Christian, how do you reconcile that?

  • Paul

“Everyone does have equal rights. I have no more right to marry someone of my own gender than anyone else does. Everyone also has every right to love whomever they choose to love.”

Tell that to some old gay guy whose person of choice can’t be in a hospital room with them because of your bigotry.

When you fight FOR civil unions as hard as you fight against gay marriage, maybe your argument will hold even a thimble’s full of validity.

  • Harrison Lewis

Paul, as a Medical Professional, I submit to you that the old gay guy would be allowed in the room unless the patient or the patients family says otherwise. Additonally, the patient could make legal arrangements before being hospitalized. Gays have the same rights as the rest of us. However, they are seeking additional rights. Polls show that most Americans are tolerant of civil unions, however; the gay left was seeking marriage in California. The gay left also irritated African Americans by mirroring the marriage discussion with the civil rights movement. We were not amused and voted for Prop 8.

Back to the guy in the hospital. I visit people in the hospital regularly and sexual orientation never comes up. I have never been barred from visiting anyone. I suspect you have not been either.

There are documents in place now called power-of-attorney, living wills, advanced directives, etc. he old guy should use them and stop blaming the rest of us for not being prepared.
