The Resurrection of Lazarus – John 11:28-57

Death is the great enemy that we all have to face: Young, old, middle-aged, man, woman, red, yellow, black, or white. All of us have this dark thing down the road in front of us. None of us can tell for sure how far away or how close it is. But we all know it’s there.

It is the most fearful reality of our existence, and that is why many people spend most of their life trying not to think about it. They don’t want to deal with the implications of that darkness, so they sort of live their lives as if it’s not going to happen. It’s easier to do when you’re young. Everybody feels like they are going to live forever when they are young, but as you get older and get a little life under your belt and start feeling your years in your bones, you realize that you can’t ignore this anymore. Some people go through a mid-life crisis after ignoring death and then having the issue forced on them by their advancing age.

The Psalmist teaches us to pray, 10 The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away… 12 So teach us to number our days that we may present to You a heart of wisdom” (Ps. 90:10-12).

Until you realize that death is your biggest problem and that it’s not something you can handle yourself and that it’s actually a curse from which you need redemption, you are going to be wasting your life.
