In his little book Reflections on the Psalms, C. S. Lewis calls it a “miserable idea that God should in any sense need, or crave for, our worship like a vain woman wanting compliments, or a vain author presenting his new books to people who never met or heard of him.” Lewis says that such a being would be an “absurd Deity”—one so needy and vain that he would be more worth our contempt and disdain than our worship (108-109).
What then do we do with the fact that the Bible presents God as a God-centered God? A God who regularly calls upon His creatures to worship Him?
