What can I say? I like “Paperman.”
I enjoyed this animated short from Disney.

Receding Men and Rotting Hollywood
Peggy Noonan takes a hard line against the vulgar fare that seems to be so ubiquitous in the material coming out of Hollywood. She begins by noting the general malaise that has fallen over our country. She writes: We are making more sick teenagers and young men now, not fewer, and this is going to continue as our culture breaks up. I think we all know this, deep down.

The show went on at “Saturday Night Live”
Even Saturday Night Live acknowledged the national mood in their cold open last night. I don’t remember ever seeing anything like this from SNL. (HT: Russell Moore)

Lincoln: Clothed with immense power? Really?
Like most movie-goers, I was in eager anticipation when I first heard the news of Steven Spielberg’s new Lincoln movie. After the trailer was released, however, my enthusiasm was significantly dampened. That initial glimpse into the movie looked dull. But then after the movie came out, I read reactions from folks who saw the movie before I did. To a man, they all indicated that the movie was much better than the trailer. So my expectations for this movie went from high to low then back to high again. I was eager for the good reports I’d heard to be right.

How George Lucas Saved Star Wars by Firing George Lucas
Ben Domenech has a fantastic commentary on the recent sale of the “Star Wars” franchise to Disney. In short, Domenech argues that George Lucas saved “Star Wars” by firing George Lucas. Perhaps it comes as news to some of you that Star Wars needed saving. But that’s only because you have very bad taste in movies. (Just kidding…sort of) Seriously, though. Those of us who grew up with the first three movies were by and large really disappointed with the second three movies (i.e., the prequels). From Jar Jar Binks to the goopey love affair between Anakin and what’s-her-name, the story and the characterization were abysmal in the prequels. They…

Justin Bieber’s Pro-life Story
Justin Bieber’s mother, Pattie Mallette, has just published a book about her lifestory. In it she reveals some painful details about her past. As a young girl, she endured sexual abuse and subsequently turned to substance abuse. She underwent some sort of religious conversion but nevertheless became pregnant out of wedlock at age 17. In a recent interview with Kathy Lee Gifford (see above), Mallette shares that she was encouraged to abort her unborn child, but she refused. Watch the excerpt above. The rest of the interview is here.

Extended First Look at “Les Misérables”
A few months ago, I posted the first trailer to the upcoming movie-musical “Les Misérables.” It’s one of the most well-done trailers that I’ve ever seen. In just a couple of minutes, it captures all the pathos of Victor Hugo’s epic story. How were they able to do this? As the video above explains, the director recorded all the vocals live on set. They were not pre-recorded in a studio. This allowed the actors to act, even as they were singing their lines. If the trailer is any indication, this movie will be one that you won’t want to miss.
