    The Critic’s Lullaby

I’ve been in Louisiana this weekend and have had the chance to reconnect with many old friends. While I was there, I got to see one of my favorite bands, “The Critics.” They are working on a new album that will be released one song at a time beginning next week. I found out on Sunday, however, that they released a single not long ago titled “Lullaby.” The lead singer wrote the song as a lullaby for his baby niece, and it’s just a simple word about the hope of the new heavens and the new earth. I love the song and thought it worth sharing with you. The only…

    The Cello Song

Steven Sharp Nelson released a single in May that is a variation on an old Bach classic. It’s kind of an experiment. It is a song written for one cello, but he does it with eight. Watch it above, and download the single here. (HT: Trevin Wax)

    Owl City’s Newest Drops Today

Owl City’s sophomore release drops today. It’s the follow-up to the 2009 album containing the mega-hit single “Fireflies.” My two girls loved “Fireflies”especially the video. They don’t know that the lead singer’s name is Adam Young. They always refer to him as “the man with all his toys.” Christianity Today has an interview with Adam Young today. In the interview, Young talks about how he writes songs. He explains, “My prayer has always been, ‘Lord, just give me the songs you want me to write so I can record them, release them, put them in the can, and reflect all glory and praise back to you.” Read the rest here.…

    New Sovereign Grace Album

Sovereign Grace Music has just released a new worship album titled “Risen.” Here’s what C. J. Mahaney says about the project: “In time for our upcoming celebration of Easter, the newest Sovereign Grace Music album was released yesterday: Risen. “What I love about this album—what I love about all the albums produced by Sovereign Grace Music—is the gospel-centered sound doctrine that informs the lyrics. Here in these 13 songs our hearts and affections are focused on the resurrection of our Savior, where God the Father publicly demonstrated his satisfaction with the Son’s sacrifice on the cross for our sins and where our hope of future resurrection finds its guarantee.” “Risen”…

    Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

The band “Mercy Me” has a running gag on their YouTube channel called “The Cover Tune Grab Bag,” in which they do fun covers of popular songs. Many of the videos look like they are shot backstage with the guys just goofing around. In any case, it’s pretty entertaining to see the band let their proverbial hair down. On Sunday, they posted what is probably my favorite video to date: a cover of the Beatles’ “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.” Watch above. If you want to see more, their YouTube channel is here.

    D.A. becomes an M.C.

Students of Boyce College, if you hear me yelling “Westside” randomly in the hallway, this post explains why. It’s my own jubilant tribute to some lyrical madness that Dr. D. A. Carson laid down on a track for Curtis “Voice” Allen. I don’t know how he did it, but somehow “Voice” got Dr. Carson’s voice in a rap about the Westminster Catechism. Dr. Carson’s big line is “Westside!” (which I suppose corresponds to “Westminster” somehow). Download here or listen below. Lose My Soul

I love this song, and I love this video. It’s a riff on Matthew 16:26, “For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” This text is often mistaken as a verse for greedy rich people. This is a distortion. This text is for everyone. It is for every person who tends to fixate on his idols in place of Christ. It is for all of us—rich or poor, young or old, everyone. We all have hearts that are prone to wander, and this text calls us back to recognize what…

    Flame’s New Album, “Captured”

I cannot say enough about Marcus “Flame” Gray’s new album, “Captured.” Once again, he has put together an album that combines musical and creative excellence with profound theological depth. As far as I’m concerned, Flame is a genius, and this album is a must-buy both for hip-hop fans and for all those others who might need to broaden their horizons. My favorite tracks on here are “Nonsense,” “Alive,” “All I Need,” and “Move.” The cameo by MC Ryan Fullerton is also at the top of my list, so be sure to listen to “Daniel 10.”

    Christmas Music – Pop

This third category is a bit of a catch-all. In short, the “Pop” category includes recent-ish holiday tunes that we have come to enjoy. Some of the items in this category are well-received by a wide audience and are on their way to moving into the “traditional” list. Some of the others may never make it there, though we still really enjoy them around our house. Once again, each album cover links to an Amazon.com page where you can order or download the music.
