Tommy Nelson on the 60’s

Pastor Tommy Nelson says that the 1960’s were the best of times and the worst of times. He also says that understanding the philosophical and theological questions driving the upheavals of that decade is essential for the Christian to understand—like “the sons of Issachar, men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do” (1 Chronicles 12:32). This particular series is a bit of a departure for Nelson, who is a consistent and tenacious verse-by-verse expositor of scripture.

In any case, you will enjoy listening to these messages even if you don’t agree with his historical and cultural analysis of the last 50 years or so. One thing you will hear is a man who has been heavily influenced by Francis Schaeffer.

Interesting, considering I am writing a paper for my first doctoral class on the Scripture Songs of the Jesus Movement and their use of the Psalms.

I haven’t listened to the messages yet, but I am assuming he would be discussing this movement since it began in the late 60s.

    Denny,

One thing to point out is that Tommy says he did this series because he believes the youth they are seeing in their church are very much inline with the philosophy and attitudes that drove the 60’s. So it isn’t just about the 60’s, it’s about now. I wonder if you could not draw a parallel betweens some of the guru’s of the 60’s (Leary for example) and some (not all) of leaders of pomo/emergent leaders of today?

Great series by Tommy, like his others. I enjoyed listening to the series every week when I went for a run with my iPod. It is very relevant for a Christian to understand what the sixties were REALLY like, considering two of the presidential candidates want to harken back to the “good ole days!” Remember, two of our biggest entitlement programs began in 1965 (Medicaid and Medicare) and they grow more expensive by the year!
