Stick a Fork in Giuliani

You can stick a fork in Mayor Rudy Giuliani because he’s done. At least that’s the judgment that James Dobson has made, and I fundamentally agree with him. In case you missed it last week, Dobson said this:

The jig is up. Rudy Giuliani finally admitted in a speech at Houston Baptist University last week that he is an unapologetic supporter of abortion on demand. That revelation came as no great shock to those of us in the pro-life movement. His public pronouncements as mayor of New York, together with his more recent tap dances on the campaign trail, have told a very clear story.

How could Giuliani say with a straight face that he “hates” abortion,” while also seeking public funding for it? How can he hate abortion and contribute to Planned Parenthood in 1993, 1994, 1998 and 1999? And how was he able for many years to defend the horrible procedure by which the brains are sucked from the heads of viable, late-term, un-anesthetized babies? Those beliefs are philosophically and morally incompatible. What kind of man would even try to reconcile them?

Like Bill Clinton, who told us glibly that he wanted abortion to be “safe, legal and rare,” Rudy wanted conservatives to believe he had undergone some kind of an election-eve conversion, more or less. Then the contradictions began catching up with him, which often happens to those who play games with words. . .

Speaking as a private citizen and not on behalf of any organization or party, I cannot, and will not, vote for Rudy Giuliani in 2008. It is an irrevocable decision. If given a . . . choice between him and Sens. Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, I will either cast my ballot for an also-ran – or if worse comes to worst – not vote in a presidential election for the first time in my adult life. My conscience and my moral convictions will allow me to do nothing else.

True that.

I wonder if Hannity will recant of his support for the former mayor? He has said repeatedly that he can live with Giuliani’s position.

Thanks for the post on Dobson.

In the spirit of the Burk who once corrected a comment that the Burk blog was “the bomb,” saying rather that it should be, “da bomb,” I submit a humble “true dat”!

Hannity is pathetic in every regard.

How did Dr. Dobson feel about Reagan, then? Remember, Reagan was pro-choice when he first got into office, IIRC.

I’m unequivocally pro-life, but if it comes down to Hillary and Rudy, I’m voting for Rudy. Rudy claims he’ll appoint strict constitutionalists for the Supreme Court. That’s better than anything Hillary would do. As Reagan appointments Kennedy and O’Connor and George Bush’s David Souter show, there’s no guarantee that a pro-life president means a pro-lifer gets on the bench. Furthermore, Rudy will be far more tougher in the war on terror than any Democrat. If we lose that war, the debate on abortion won’t matter.

I really will be shocked if Giuliani gets the nod from the GOP. It will, to be sure, result in millions staying home from the polls on election day, whether you like that line of thinking or not. When elections are won and lost by less than that, I don’t think that the GOP will take that risk, since it would alienate the base. Sure, if he gets the nomination, it could bring in more moderate voters, but I doubt if it would be enough to outweigh the loss of true social conservatives.

Further, that’s where a lot, and I mean a LOT, of the GOP money is. Someone might well vote for Rudy, but would never send him financial support.

Lots to consider. I can’t vote for Rudy, and I hope Hannity pulls his head out of his rear end. Many many of his listeners aren’t buying it.

    Ryan,

Reagan wrote that after his conversion to the pro-life camp. Which was after the 1980 election.

Which brings me back to my original question.

  • Paul

actually, while it kills me to say it, I could see myself very easily voting for Ron Paul.

But what about (gasp!) the war on terror? He voted against the Iraq war and the Patriot Act!

oh, wait, a Republican with a conscience! That’s why I like him!

Why do you guys even give a flip about Sean Hannity? IMO he has only proven himself to be a blow hard for conservative morals not unlike O’Reilly. So what! Even the heirachy in Salt Lake City stands for “biblical” morality…..for that matter the Pharisees did also.

I am against abortion period in any case and we should do what we can at the polls to stop it. But the Kingdom of God is within us not in a political system. We have lost our first love in place of morality and therefore idolize so called persons of morality over Jesus Christ our Lord. How have we fallen to such dung? Jesus and John the baptist called men like this brood vipers when they came calling.

Don’t we see that this is the real apostasy of the church in the last days? Jesus was crucified for calling Himself God and exposing the self-righteousness of the religious leaders. When we focus on outward morality of men we are no different than the scribes that Jesus exposed.

Solomon was right, there is nothing new under the sun.

So please for the sake of yourselves and the Lord we serve, vote what you think is right, but don’t focus on a world system for morality apart from the Spirit of God. If we depend on a politcal system we are most likely treading on idolatry instead of our God who can deliver us.

    My 2 cents

It’s simple, Anyone on the GOP is far better then the other side …. If Rudy gets the nod and you stay home election day your fools. I don’t like Rudy, never did but if he gets the nod he is 100% better then a clinton/edwards or any other lightweight they came up with. Look at what happened last Nov. Now we have dems running the house and senate into the ground. Stay home and be prepared to pay the price. If this country can’t solve the invasion of illegals and get Iraq in order the rest is all a side show. I say to you out there WAKE UP.

  • Paul

first off, the house and senate are hardly being run into the ground. Instead, the average joe is being accounted for, for the first time in 12 years. God bless them for that.

Secondly, Mark Foley or Tom DeLay were better than Paul Simon or Harry Truman? Please. Even Dan Rostenkowski, who was dirtier than a mudpit, at least did good by his district! DeLay just redrew his district around the people that needed his help.

If you want to vote for republicans based strictly on the right to life issue, then fine. However, if you think their total package is better than practically any other party out there, then I’d really like some of whatever it is that you’re smoking.

  • Barry

    Kris,
I don’t think anyone here is focusing “on a world system for morality apart from the Spirit of God.” Nor have we put our faith in a political system.

I personally give a flip about Hannity because he has one of the highest listened-to talk shows 3 hours a day, and millions are listening to what he says, and so far he has “as a pro-lifer, been satisfied with Rudy’s position.” That’s disturbing to all who truly love the life that God gives at conception.

His is a loud voice, and a wrong voice on this issue, and that’s why I give a flip. Loud and wrong voices on this issue need to be seen as such.

Barry, I agree with you on the S. Hannity deal. Rudy will make a statement and Sean tries to spell it out for him. That is BS. I don’t care if he wants Rudy and pulls for him. The thing is he acts or tries to be fair. He has had all the GOP guys on and when Duncan Hunter was on he was on for 20 minutes, Huckabee & trancredo same. Mark Levin called him one day after he “cleared up what Rudy meant and Levin said “Thanks Sean for clearing the air for Rudy for the 1000th time” Barry your right. Paul as usual you wrong again. The house and the senate are in trouble. They are lazy, can’t get anything done and all they do is grab a mic. and BS. Yea Foley was a bum, but the so-called leadership of the house and senate is a joke.

I can understand voting against Rudy in the primary, and I can understanding hoping or even being confident that he won’t win the nomination. What I can’t understand is facing a choice between him and Hillary and not voting for him. I really think that stance from a pro-life voter is unconscionable. I can’t see how it’s consistent with pro-life principles to do nothing at all to do what’s in your power to choose between a very bad situation and a non-ideal one that isn’t very bad. Not voting or voting for a third-party candidate is the moral equivalent of voting for Hillary.
