Romney vs. Obama on Gay Marriage

Michael Foust has done some fantastic reporting contrasting Romney’s and Obama’s records on gay marriage. There is a real difference here, and Foust reminds us of the strong stand that Romney took when he was governor of Massachusetts. Foust writes:

Romney was governor of Massachusetts when the state’s highest court issued its first-in-the-nation decision legalizing gay marriage, and he not only fought to have the ruling overturned but also supported an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would define marriage as between a man and a woman.

Obama voted against that federal marriage amendment as a U.S. senator, and once he was president he became the first sitting U.S. president to oppose the Defense of Marriage Act and also to endorse gay marriage.

The rest of the article goes into much more detail on the history. Read it here.

“the first sitting president to oppose DOMA?”

There were only two other options. One of those options signed the bill. It’s not a big deal if a guy doesn’t support a fairly minor piece of legislation (and compared to the Civil Rights Act, the abolishment of slavery, the creation of the federal highway system, etc. it is REALLY minor) that was passed 16 years ago. But keep looking up. The sky might just fall yet…

Hi Denny. This comment doesn’t really apply to the post above. It’s just a friendly suggestion regarding the “share” options below each post. You’r FB link is a button to simply “like” which is nice. But would you consider putting a real FB share link so we can be more selective about where on FB or with which of our FB friends we share your posts.
