Peggy Noonan Writes on Ashley Smith

Peggy Noonan

My favorite columnist, Peggy Noonan, wrote about Ashley Smith’s seven hours with murderer Brian Nichols. Noonan’s piece is the best I’ve read yet on Ashley Smith’s encounter with the killer, and I think you should read it too. She includes the entire transcript of Smith’s testimony to reporters after the event. Noonan’s article is titled “Flannery O’Connor Country.” Go read this one. You will be glad that you did.

This truly is a beautiful story. What humbles me most is the fact that it was “The Purpose Driven Life” that the Lord has chosen to use in this situation. If I had my way, this book would never appeared on the scene – with its theologically lopsided message and Bible verses taken out of context. The Lord did not consult me on this one, though. What do we get as a result? Two lives are changed, my ego, which likes to hide behind the walls of theological fortress, is brought down, and all the glory goes to God.

Wow! I have forgotten how much I dislike Warren! But reading your article made my blood boil all over again. I will post a reply to that article also.
Now here is a catch – how do we deal with these things in love? This would be a good article for you to write, Dr. Burk. I know you have posted an entry on how to argue theology, but this is different, and I would want to know your opinion. This also goes with your Separatist vs. Puritan entry.
I was going to write more about Rick Warren, but I think I’ll save it for my reply to that article of yours.
