Obama To End “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

Here’s the lede from the CNN.com story:

“In an overlooked YouTube video posted on Friday, a spokesman for Barack Obama said the president-elect is committed to ending the policy that bars openly gay men and women from serving in the U.S. armed forces.”

As one who has served in the military, I can say that this disturbs me a great deal. It’s not like the military is an “equal opportunity” employer. Plus, our troops need to have everything working in their favor. Right or wrong, if a young man is uncomfortable with the fact his fellow soldier is a homosexual, it detracts from his focus on the mission. Plus it’s not like a gay man or woman can’t join the military.

And what of the transgendered folks? Where will they bivouac? I have a 17-year-old who is considering the military and the new commander-in-chief is NOT inspiring confidence. It’s causing him to have serious reservations and look in other directions.
